Hi Greetings from England.
I,m new here so just finding my way at the moment.
Does anyone know if the Opel blitz 1.5t 2.-32 trucks were used by the Afrika Korps?
I have one and the nearest photo i have seen is in southern Italy.Lots of photos in France,Russia etc.
I am thinking of doing Afrika Korps Re-enacting
Best Regards

Re: opel blitz 1.5t lorry

Great looking truck. If you find it works for Afrika Korps, how will you change the look? Just found some good AK footage colorized that show trucks loaded with surrendered AK men rolling down the road. Note how close the unarmed GIs are to the captured German troops. They seem quite friendly..probably relieved to be out of the fight. Any of these close?

Re: opel blitz 1.5t lorry

Hi again .Thanks for the link, the trucks are mostly 3t Opel blitz  with a few french and British  ones.I suppose just because i have not found a picture does not mean they were not there. They stopped making 1.5t Opel blitz trucks in 1942.Here are a few more photos. The expansion tank i added to make it run better.http://afrikakorps.forumcrea.com/img/avatars/afrikakorps/big/2421_s5001109_copy.jpghttp://afrikakorps.forumcrea.com/img/avatars/afrikakorps/big/2421_s5001110_copy.jpghttp://afrikakorps.forumcrea.com/img/avatars/afrikakorps/big/2421_s5001112_copy.jpgHope they load ok,i,m new at this,if you want anymore pics let me know.

Re: opel blitz 1.5t lorry

I am away from home until this weekend. I will check my library for books on AK used vehicles for you. Great looking engine. Looks similar to my old Chevy trucks from the 40s. I bet that 6cyl sounds sweet.  Where did you find it and was it a total ground up restore? Never seen one in the states..It will look good with a DAK palm stencil on the door but then driving around town might be a problem. I had a Kubelwagen years ago in tan with the palm and other markings and I sure got the 'looks'. Best holiday wishes! (What really makes it are the blackout lamps and the shovel!)

Re: opel blitz 1.5t lorry

Hi Dawn patrol
I only noticed 1.5t Opel,s in period photos after i acquired this one.
Opel were American owned from the 1920,s.That,s why the engine looks familiar to you..All Opel badged trucks in ww2 were made by General Motors.I don,t have a problem driving it around as long as remember to put civilian plates over the German ones.In the last few years the only breakdowns i have had were tyre punctures.I have been clocked on the motorway here doing sixty.Down hill. Most shows i attend are 300 mile round trips. It is quite a rare truck even in Europe,There are a lot more 3 ton ones about. What i like about it is i can sleep in the back at shows.I could not do that in the ford jeep i used to own.I swapped the jeep for the truck.I think i got the better deal. The truck was used in filming Colditz the series in the early seventies,David McCallum stole it in episode 2.It was totally restored in the 1990,s. back to its original condition.I have a letter from Opel saying the chassis was made between 1938 and 1942.The RAF deleted the records dept. in 1944.It has a lot of post war bits on it wheels, even the doors.I have always wanted a Kubelwagen.I should have got one years ago,Too expensive now.
Regards
Anton

Re: opel blitz 1.5t lorry

I have found a photo of a 1.5t Opel blitz in Africa with a WL. numberplate making it Luftwaffe. It says private archive on it,I did not think an original photo could be copyrighted by anyone else but the person who took it,Would it be alright to post the photo i found online here?

Re: opel blitz 1.5t lorry

I would go ahead and post it. Maybe give credit to the archive if you want. I think private photos that are in collections cannot be copywritten(unless published in a book). Most collectors don't want them published somewhere without permission. If the 'owner' posted it online it should be fair game to show here for discussion. Thanks for the back story on your Opel. Very interesting the General Motors story. It's film history is great too. Good news that you found proof of the 1.5 in Afrika! What color is it? Looking forward to seeing it posted. cool

Do you think this one could be in Afrika?Does anyone have any idea what could have been in the wooden body?Perhaps a radio truck.
