Re: WWII German Tropical Caps - An Overview.

Out of pure curiosity... Has the Heer 2nd pattern M40 tropical cap with sweat band been faked? I have seen a few unissued examples in collections. They seem original to me however, I would love to hear what the team (that had more experience with M40 tropical caps) know a d have seen. Thanks in advance!

Re: WWII German Tropical Caps - An Overview.

Yes, it has.
I'm unsure about the '2nd' pattern nomenclature about caps as there are five variants - and the 'no soutache, sweat-banded type' is what I would consider the 2nd to last version?

Re: WWII German Tropical Caps - An Overview.

All types of M40 have been faked. Some original unissued example have come from the beehive find as there were some mint M40's in that cache.

Re: WWII German Tropical Caps - An Overview.

Thanks guys! Does anyone have a photo (or photos) to share for reference that show a high quality reproduction of an M40 with sweatband? Thanks!

Re: WWII German Tropical Caps - An Overview.

Mark, that would be stellar and much appreciated. I have one of these caps being offered to me and it would be my first Heeres Tropical billed cap. It is stone mint (still with the fold crease from side to side, marked well and with sweat band. Seems original to me... But we have seen some amazing reproductions come up haven't we all. Thanks again in advance!

Re: WWII German Tropical Caps - An Overview.

How many various types of grommets are known to have been used by the various firms and throughout production? Were they always painted on the outside?

Re: WWII German Tropical Caps - An Overview.

Hi Wessels,
Always a tricky question due to supply, manufacturer, year of production etc etc.
There were magnetic & none magnetic grommets, enamelled or bare outer shells, (and then we are starting to mention enamel colours which also vary), grommets with the internal keeper never applied, larger diameter, smaller diameter...
Having said that - it still isn't that hard to spot post war examples smile
