WW1 Imperial German Tropenhelm!

Well i never thought i would get a second chance at owning one of these big_smile
I missed out on another one a while back and that had been the only one i had seen for sale ever!

Then this one popped up the other day, i wasn't going to let this one get away tongue
These are the 1902 pattern Bortfeldt tropical helmet worn by the German East Asienkorps in China during the Boxer Rebellion
with the Imperial German Colonial pattern Eagle plate on the front. This helmet plate was worn on the front of all types of helmets
by Colonial Troops only. There was also a different model Tropenhelm that had a square back with a fold design so if you were lying in
the prone position there was some give so as not to rub on your back.

But when the Pascha I and Pascha II Expeditions of the Asienkorps were sent to Palestine during the later stages of the Great War these
Helmets were taken from these old stocks. And most just removed the plate from the front which is seen in most photos taken in Palestine
for some reason as you can see in some photos the cotton loops on the front were the plate slips into, but some are still clearly visible as you will see below.

This particular Tropenhelm still has the loops sewn to the outside for connecting the neck protector which i have posted before it also has the makers mark
on the leather band inside, interesting stamp FABRIK MARKE, i have tried looking for this maker but with no luck but in my search did find other similar stamps
with the same FABRIK MARKE on them, all of them were very old.

These helmets are also seen with a felt band in colour of service around them with a large tri colour cockade either on the front or side, i can't see any evidence of this
helmet having one. I'll keep my eyes open you never know, i have seen the cockades for sale and i might be able to make the felt band as i think
this would finish it of nicely. (see pics)

Anyway the Tropenhelm looks fantastic on the mannequin, gives it that real old world look big_smile

First one is Imperial German Cavalry in China 1900-1902

The second soldier was listed with NCO in Palestine
Note plate still attached to front.

Third one is a Pascha II Expedition OR soldier, probably taken in Germany prior to his service in Palestine.
Note the two holes above the helmet band were the helmet plate would have been.

Fourth is of a band member of the 505th Motorised Unit of the Asienkorps in 1917 or 1918 note also the swallows
nests and rank chevron on the arm and the Prussian Iron Cross and Turkish War Medals.

He wears the square back design of the Bortfeldt Tropenhelm & note the loops on front with plate removed

Beersheba, Palestine 1917.

Australian Officer "There go the New Zealanders Sir,....." (New Zealanders advance on Tel El Saba).
Australian General Chauvel "Tel El Saba, it's been a defensive position for tens of thousands of years,....we have to take it in one day, across an open plain!"

Turkish Artillery Gunner " British Cavalry advancing on the eastern flank"
German Officer looking through his binoculars "Their not cavalry, their Australian Light Horse,...load,...wait until they dismount and fire by order!"

Re: WW1 Imperial German Tropenhelm!

Incredible tropenhelm! I have never seen one. So interesting to see how the body evolved to the familiar AK tropenhelm. Beautiful makers logo stamp;) thanks!! Curious about the sand-wind goggles. (I have a similar set. I posted in the German desert eyewear section.)

Re: WW1 Imperial German Tropenhelm!

Thanks guys, no probs Seb.

Dawn Patrol there is actually another type of Tropenhelm that they wore that is even closer to the WW2 version and which i think they probably re-vamped
for WW2?
The first two pics are classic examples of how hard it is to research some of the WW1 Tropical items, as you can see just about all the Officers in both photos
wear different pattern tunics.
The last photo shows the Tropenhelm with the square back worn by the soldiers at the front, the others at the rear wear the WW2 type i mentioned, one of the priests is wearing
a slouch hat, probably the type the Shutztruppen wore in East Africa etc.

Check it out wink

Re: WW1 Imperial German Tropenhelm!

Thanks Dawn Patrol,
Sorry, i forgot to mention about the goggles hmm
I'm not sure about these myself i have a feeling that they maybe some type of civilian work goggles with the metal body?

I'm still looking for a set with material body, unless they are dated which most are not we can never be 100% what period with these odd sets?
I had a look at yours and yes i have seen that type before but not sure who used them as i am no expert on goggles?

Regards
Stu

Re: WW1 Imperial German Tropenhelm!

Thanks Stu. I have about the same feeling as you. Mine did come with a haul of German gear years ago but who knows. Thanks again for the great work putting this super rare tropical outfit together. Really impressive and it should be in a reference book.
