Re: Tropical Units = other Nation

I had another look and it is a Freies Arabien patch.  I think many of the members were 'recruited' from POW's, probably from French 'native' units, so he could be North African.

Jerry

Re: Tropical Units = other Nation

Fries Arabien members were recruited from disafected French nationals, as well as the odd Egyptian, I would imagine. These guys were classed as traitor's after the unit surrendered in Tunisia - and as far as I can acertain, all executed.

Re: Tropical Units = other Nation

There was by a strange chance, there was a mention of some members of the the Free Indian unit and their presence on the Dutch island of Texel.  This was on an edition of coast shown on BBC2 last night about the Nederlands.  They showed some photographs of a few of them surrounded by Dutch children and said they were sent there to recuperate and/or work on building projects.  Also mentioned that Texel was the last place that German troops surrendered, nearly two weeks after the end of the war in Europe.

Re: Tropical Units = other Nation

Thousands of Indian soldiers, who had joined Britain in the fight against fascism, betrayed the oath to the King of England. They then swore to serve Adolf Hitler. This betrayal threatened to rock British rule in India, known as the Raj. The story the German officers told their interrogators began in Berlin on 3 April 1941. This was the date that the left-wing Indian revolutionary leader, Subhas Chandra Bose, arrived in the German capital. Bose, who had been arrested 11 times by the British in India, had fled the Raj with one mission in mind. That was to seek Hitler's help in pushing the British out of India. Bose hoped to raise a force of about 100,000 men which, when armed and kitted out by the Germans, could be used to invade British India. He decided to raise them by going on recruiting visits to Prisoner-of-War camps in Germany which, at that time, confined tens of thousands of Indian soldiers captured by Rommel in North Africa.

The Legion Freies Indien / Indisches Infanterie Regiment 950 was organized as a standard German army infantry regiment of three battalions each of four companies. They were issued Standard German Army tropical uniforms and weapons. Many wore the traditional Indian turban , others chose the Hats, caps, and helmets of the German army.

Re: Tropical Units = other Nation

Sonderverband 288 was a Kampfgruppe formed from Arabs and Germans who had lived in Africa for service in Iraq, however the Iraqi rebellion failed and while Sonderverband Kompanie 287 went to the Balkans/Russia, Sonderverband Kampfgruppe 288 was sent to North Africa. Not being used for it's intended purpose, it was re-organised to be more suitable for use as a conventional combat unit. Finally it was again re-organised and renamed to become a Panzer Grenadier Regiment.

This looks like it is a 3rd pattern tunic. - Could be a 2nd pattern....what do you think?
