Need some help for my tunic

Hello

Need some infos for helping me to "restore" my tunic.

About the left pocket on the breast, I can see some marks for (high chances) 2 medals/badges.

http://i50.tinypic.com/5vd2cg.jpg

Between the 2 marks in :
- A : 2,3cm approx
- B : 2,6 cm approx

I thought putting a black wound badge and a assault infantry badge... What do you think ??

Also, correct me if I am wrong, officers didn't have necessary a tresse on colar ?? I think I've seen a portrait here without those tresses...

EDIT : This is the picture I was referring to :

Thanks in advance for the help

Re: Need some help for my tunic

By the way, on the right arm I have the feeling I can see a mark that could be for an AK cufftitle... Am I wrong ? I could be biased...

Re: Need some help for my tunic

Hi Blaise,
I would tend to think that the pin holes are post war inserts by a collector. There's very little stress wear to the material so not a lot of use...I don't see a C/T sew line - and it would definitely be a post-war application if there was one - wrong cuff for a start as it would be an 'AFRIKA' C/T on a third pattern tunic.
Only NCO's wore tress on their collars.
Regards,
Mark.

Re: Need some help for my tunic

Hi NZMark

Thanks for the answer. About the C/T, that's also what I thought considering I can't see sew line unlike for the eagle. And thanks for the tress info, that's more clear now wink

About the pin holes, I would say that's weird if they are post war because the tunic came completely stripped. And the eagle was never replaced nor the tabs on collar. So, I don't see the reasons why putting back 2 medals and not the rest... sad

Re: Need some help for my tunic

Hi Blaise,
If the pin holes were indeed wartime they generally flatten out and close up over time - yours shows recent use.
Do you know if the tunic was stripped of insignia recently...or in 1975 (in other words any time in the last 70 years?) before being sold to the next collector? That's what we all have to contemplate when looking at a pieces lifespan.
I'd like to see more of the tunic overall if possible, please?
Regards,
Mark

Sorry I've no more infos when it was stripped.

This is it :

I bought some insignias (eagle and collar tabs) for it but I still haven't put them on it. I need some shoulder boards also but they appear to be hard to find for a simple soldier (unlike the DAK Luft...), so I thought about putting some officer ones according to pictures...

My Luftwaffe tropical has the upper pocket flaps missing, though when or why is a mystery.

Re: Need some help for my tunic

So, what would you suggest me for my tunic ? I mean about shoulder straps especially. I already have the correct eagle and collar tabs. No medals, no bar, no cufftitle right ?

Thanks for the advices in advance wink

I'd go with continental straps, synthetic (rayon) eagle all machine sewn with same litzen.

Thanks !!

Also, something I am thinking, what the exact color of the thread for applying the eagle and tabs ? Light grey, grey-green,... ? I am really not sure.

Re: Need some help for my tunic

As close a match to the thread used to manufacture the tunic, Blaise. The insignia was (usually) applied in the factory so the thread was generally the same throughout the production process....

Ok that's what I wanted to know. For some reasons, I thought the thread could be different than the one used for the tunic... Well, I guess I have all my answers now.

Thanks again !

Re: Need some help for my tunic

Hi Blaise,
No worries. This is a generalization and applies to factory produced items - if we start talking about 'LaGo' or cottage industry pieces then that's a whole different matter smile Of course insignia could be period applied with a different thread than that used for tunic construction, but let's stay within a 'perfect factory environment' for arguements sake...
Cheers,
Mark
