Re: DAK/Tropical Fahrrad!

Not once have I seen a photo of a bike in use North Africa. I'd be surprised (and interested) if they did - the terrain would not be condusive to pedal-power, I'd think? smile

Re: DAK/Tropical Fahrrad!

Hi interesting question I have seen a photo of a dead german cyclist alongside a desert road in this Time Life book the caption read shot by a sniper I don't have a copy of the book now perhaps some else does and can show us the picture on here. The book is pretty easy to get on eBay.

Having survived the bloody battle of El Alamein, this German soldier was riding his bicycle westward, in an attempt to catch up to the retreat along the coastal road, when he was spotted and killed by a British sniper.

Re: DAK/Tropical Fahrrad!

I've seen this same image before - but without the bike....Now THAT is interesting - never saw a bicycle in use in Africa before. Do we know that's a German manufactured bike or locally procured piece?
Look forward to hearing more on this.
