Re: Austrian Barn Find DAK Tunic & Belt

Thanks mSteve21,

I've been having a look at the stamps in Kurtz as well, but I think that the last line of the Augsburger Kleiderfabrik stamp
might be a bit short.

I agree that a list of tropical tunic makers with examples of their stamps and perhaps front of tunic shot would be really worthwhile.

At the moment you have to look in multiple places such as this Forum, WAF, other forums, Kurtz's book and dealers sites such as Virtual Grenadier etc.
Unfortunately many dealers remove listings after they are sold so these then disappear - unless someone posts the details on a militaria forum..

Cheers Markus

P.S. From looking at the remnants of the size stamps from your enhanced image on a large screen computer (probably been staring for far too long yikes ) I reckon
the layout is standard configuration and I've tried to place the stamps where they appear in position...  Naturally I haven't put the numbers in because they aren't
clear enough to be sure....

Re: Austrian Barn Find DAK Tunic & Belt

Hi Mario,

There are some collectors who will say to leave the tunic as it was found in it's stripped condition.

There will be others who say it's ok to restore to the tunic to what it would have originally looked like - personally I'm also ok with that
as long as you're only replacing stuff where the insignia originally was.

The trouble is if you are going to put ordinary tropical litzen on the collar, it looks from the photos that it will not cover the shadow of where the
original collar patches were and this won't look right.

I would carefully measure to make sure that the collar shadows are exactly the same size as a panzer tab - the only
reference I can find so far says that these are 3.5 cm x 7.5 cm - you may want to confirm this from another source.

If there was a Gefreiter chevron on the sleeve I would say replacing this is also okay.  I can't see any medal loops so I
personally would only be looking at collar patches, early Brustadler, rank chevron and reinstate the shoulder strap bridles / buttons.

The biggest thing that I would suggest is pause and think about what to do.

As mentioned there will also be those who will suggest do nothing - the rationale being not to alter the history of the object or to point out that a
restored tunic will only be worth the sum of its individual component parts...

Also...

If you think that the bottom letter in the size stamp block is a B this would mean a Berlin depot tunic.

There are still some experienced collectors trying to work out the manufacturer stamp, but the trouble is that there were many makers
of tropical tunics (big and small firms) and not all of these appear to be documented sad  Also unfortunately the stamp on your tunic is blurred, which
is sometimes the case...

Thanks again for posting this fantastic find, most collectors will never get the opportunity to individually have your experience cool

Thanks again also to mSteve21 for stepping up to the plate and taking the time to post your photos and for other forum members who have
taken an interest in this post, which already has had in excess of 200 views big_smile

If anyone has any thoughts on the manufacturer stamp, please let us know smile

Regards Markus

Hi Markus!

I probarbly put the Eagle and a Chevron on for the Moment and see what I can find about the collerpatches, if its Panzer, I gess it will be very hard to find them (and expensive??)

I also wanna say thanks a lot to all of you who are helping me hire to find out more about the tunic and beltmaker and give me good advises and share there thoughts about the objekts.

Re: Austrian Barn Find DAK Tunic & Belt

A follow up on Panzer collar patch sizes

According to Scott Pritchett (Panzer Feldjacke Vol 1. p 269)

Standard centerline dimensions of collar insignia ranged from 33mm to 39mm wide with a length between 73mm to 79mm.
Measurements quoted include the 2mm wide piping
Also you have to consider some collars had sharpe pointed corners while others are rounded.
Noted; private tailored insignia show a huge variation in dimensions and angles

Thanks mSteve 21, your contribution has been great and you've probably earned that invite to the Eagles Nest.

Re: Austrian Barn Find DAK Tunic & Belt

Common to see Luftwaffe flak units wearing army tropical uniforms early on in the Afrika campaign

Mario, your tunic looks to have had Pz collar tabs applied going by the shadow

Nice tunic. More likely officers upgrade than with Pz or Assault Gun, but not impossible.
I see H42.
Quality and the stamp configuration - and placement - point to P&C.
