Tropical Heer Panzergrenadier NCO Mantel shoulder straps

Hi, I haven’t posted detailed photos of these Mantel (greatcoat / overcoat) shoulder straps before, which I acquired
about 4 years ago.  For those in the know, possibly recognised as being formerly in the collection of GregB in NZ.

Unfortunately I personally haven’t come across another set with exactly the same configuration
on the reverse and I’ve often wondered about these….

If anyone else has seen this pattern before (with the short section of shirt fabric on the underside); or if there are any opinions,
please feel free to comment as always.

Regards Markus

A pair of similar shoulder straps in period use - but obviously different branch of service.  Looks like a PK photo but
I hope this water was boiled before it was drunk.... neutral

I'm no expert on these, however they do exhibit the features you would expect to see on original straps

Nice shoulder straps.

It appears an additional piece of material has been period added to the back straps as a repair or to make them longer?

A good addition to the collection, thank you for sharing.

Enjoy the hobby, Keith

Re: Tropical Heer Panzergrenadier NCO Mantel shoulder straps

Hi msteve21 and Keith, thanks for taking the time to respond.  I agree that many of the features look right and I
also thought that they may have been period altered.

I've seen other pairs of Mantel (overcoat) shoulder straps where the lower woolen tongue has been hand stitched to the upper 'deck' -
but not where there is a gap in the shirt fabric as I've highlighted with the red boxes in the below photograph....

Nice pair Markus. I think they were altered to make them longer.

Re: Tropical Heer Panzergrenadier NCO Mantel shoulder straps

Well I think I now have a better understanding of why the lower tongue of these shoulder straps needed to be
extended.

I found some images of another Panzergrenadier mantel (overcoat) strap and it looks like there may have been a design
flaw with a run of Mantel shoulder straps.  If you look at the image below of this EM strap you will see that the button holes clearly do not align,
which would mean that some of the top deck would need to folded in underneath to make the strap fit onto the button and bridle.

With an EM strap this is probably ok, but when you have an NCO strap it means that the end section of tropical Tresse (braid) would need to be twisted
underneath and would not be be suitable - this is why the original owner of the straps was required to lengthen the lower tongues to fit them properly to his coat
and display all of the rank Tresse.

You can see how my strap needed to be lengthened for the shortfall in the length of the tongue and allow the button holes to line up.

I'd be surprised if there weren't more examples - particularly of NCO straps - where the tongue had to be extended.  I think that the case is sol-ved http://afrikakorps.forumcrea.com/img/avatars/afrikakorps/big/2587_clouseau_1.jpg

I also was thinking one of the consequences of this would be that a second set of straps would had to have been cut up to get the piece of tongue
with the buttonhole required for the extension...

Sewing looks to been done in the field, possibly the alterations were done by company tailor after discovering production issue.

Cheers
