Re: Tropical Signal Insignia

Hi, a recent purchase - a tropical Funkmeister badge.

Anyone have a photo of this being worn on a tunic?

Regards Markus.

Actually quite rare to find period photos of speciality badges been worn

Re: Tropical Signal Insignia

Thanks msteve21, agree very unusual to find specialist badges in use on tropical uniforms, apart from some rare examples.

The main ones I've observed are the medical specialist badge and the signal blitz in areas like Greece or Italy.  I think that the problem with the signal blitz
was similar to the soutache on tropical caps - the individual colour for the different arms of services was a logistical problem when this needed to be permanently affixed
to an item of clothing.  (Lot easier to have a generic cap and swap slip on shoulder boards with the correct arm of service Waffenfarbe on tunics).

The very few signal blitzes that I've seen that appear to have been affixed to tunics looked to have been very crudely tacked on by the soldiers themselves.

I've even sat there staring at film footage of long lines of German troops as they've filed past following surrender in Tunisia and virtually nothing at all to be seen, despite the fact that these
tropical specialist badges appear to have been available from 1942...

Regards Markus

Re: Tropical Signal Insignia

Another example of the signal blitz being worn in North Africa, but again this appears to be a continental blitz
attached to a tropical tunic...  Just lucky with this photo that the tunic was placed on the ground in a position where the
blitz was visible.

Given the large field of view from this position and equipment I'm assuming this was likely to be a forward artillery observation
post and if so the blitz itself would be red.  If you look carefully you can see the single chevron of a tropical Gefreiter rank badge
worn directly below the signal blitz.

The insignia set up on this tunic would have looked something like this....

Re: Tropical Signal Insignia

Well, its Sunday afternoon and raining here in Brisbane and I thought I’d take some time to carefully have another look
at some of the videos of German forces surrendering in Tunisia in 1943 on Youtube.

You’ve got to be pretty sharp eyed and I’ve spotted some specialist insignia, some of which was only visible for a second or less…

These examples were found in a video titled Tunisian Campaign (1943), which can be viewed by accessing this
link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TcXlNlQ9uTs

Regards Markus

At 13:54 a soldier with a well-faded tunic appears to be wearing a signal blitz above his rank insignia.

At 14:41 a soldier steps into frame for 1 second, wearing an overcoat (maybe a Wachmantel due to the size of the collar) wearing a
signal blitz – the blitz itself looks light in colour so probably transport or Flak.
http://afrikakorps.forumcrea.com/img/avatars/afrikakorps/big/2587_mantel_signal_blitz.jpg   http://afrikakorps.forumcrea.com/img/avatars/afrikakorps/big/2587_transport_blitz.jpg   OR   http://afrikakorps.forumcrea.com/img/avatars/afrikakorps/big/2587_flak_blitz.jpg

Between 21:32 and 21:46 there are some apparent farewells and one of the soldiers who shakes hands with the officers is wearing
a specialist badge on his lower right sleeve – from looking at this closely I think this is a Schirrmeister badge.

Here's an example of a the Schirrmeister badge format, though being in wool this example is the type worn on the Mantel (overcoat).
Anyway, hopefully you can see from the embroidery pattern what I think that the above badge is...

And here's the tropical tunic version..

Re: Tropical Signal Insignia

Another example of the humble signal blitz, though this one looks to have been tunic attached at some stage in its life,
as there are thread holes right around the perimeter of the badge and some wear to the edges....
