Black Leather K98 Patronentaschen (Ammunition Pouches) dated 1941

Hi, I haven’t shown these before.  A common piece of equipment used in North Africa, but surprisingly very little about
these pouches have been posted previously on the Forum.

Both of mine are dated 1941, so they would be the right year of manufacture for service in Africa – but like a lot of things unless
you have an unbroken chain of ownership from that theatre of war to now - who knows where these were used..

Anyway, here they are.   Sometimes it can be difficult to identity the manufacturer marks on the reverse of the pouch due
to the pebbled leather.  Thankfully both of mine were stamped clearly so I know who the manufacturers were.

Regards Markus

dla 1941 – manufacturer Karl Barth Militäreffektenfabrik of Waldbröl.

Nice Ammo pouches Markus

The continental ammo pouches appear to be the  most commonly used in Afrika,  this seems to be supported by period photos

Interesting photo Markus of the DAK machine Gun Squad, no painted helmet, two of them are missing shoulder straps. Photo must have been taken just after the helmets were issued, which I guessing is around May 41

Yes, msteve21 I was also looking at the unpainted helmets and the hessian helmet cover worn by what looks to be a squad leader.

From what I've seen from early DAK film and photo images perhaps only Pioneers were issued with steel helmets.  Looking at still and moving film
footage of the Easter attack on Tobruk in 1941 it looks like units such as MG Bn 8 went into battle wearing tropical pith helmets, which would only have
stopped the penetration of the suns rays.

Regards Markus.
