Afrikakorps Reference Books

Hi, I thought that I’d share with Forum members some of the reference books that I use for research.

I know that some of these books have been referred to by other Forum contributors in previous posts, but I thought that I’d include a photo of the covers of the publications that I’m referring to and include a sneak peak at some of the pages.

I’m sure the authors and publishers won’t mind as they will probably get some extra sales and it’s only a few sample pages of each….

If you have any other reference books and want to include these please feel free to post your contribution.

Regards Markus

Re: Afrikakorps Reference Books

Thanks guys, I reckon that if you're going to invest in this hobby then spending some money on decent reference books is well worth while.

The first one I bought was Rommel's Army in Africa by Dal McGuirk back in the early 1990's, followed shortly after by Uniforms and Traditions
of the German Army 1933-1945 (vol 3) which I found to be indispensable for identifying German field equipment.

Like some other collectors, with a young family, mortgage and bills piling up I had a break from collecting (from 1996 to 2014) and since returning to the hobby
have found that there are a lot more reference books available, a number being in what is probably best described as coffee table format.

I've found that use of these in combination with information from various militaria forums has usually steered me in the right direction when selecting an item to buy
and to have a better understanding of the historical context of different pieces.

IMO with the cost of many pieces of tropical German uniforms and equipment you need to research and study these until you can tell the difference between legitimate pieces,
deliberate forgeries and reproductions.  It takes a long time to gather this knowledge and the forgers are getting better sad

My motto now is that if I'm not confident in something being legitimate I'd rather let it pass - lest I decide in haste and repent at my leisure.

Regards Markus

Re: Afrikakorps Reference Books

Here my contribution to this thread

This is a great insight into the German point of view , written by a Afrika veteran

These next two refence books set the benchmark for identifying original DAK militaria
A bit dated but still a must have in your library

This is part of a series of books written by Scott Pritchett, if nothing else buy Vol 2, one of the best resource books written

Concur with Markus comments, books are one of the best resources in gaining the appropriate knowledge about Militaria, best of all most of the above can now be purchased second hand off ebay for a fraction of their original retail price
