Thoughts on this helmet? Where the vertical line on the left of the decal ends, there is damage. This can mean a fake? Have I learned that correctly? Is it worth buying/considering?
Advice on decals happily received!

Re: Help needed for reference

Hard to say with out an hands on inspection and more photos

Helmet paint is lacking certain features I would expect to see on a 75 year old helmet, gut feeling is its not good sad

Tropical DD SS helmet would be one of the most rarest of WW11 German helmets,

Be very sceptical of DD SS helmets, plenty of forgers/dealers out there just waiting to rip you off

Keen to hear what other Forum Members may have to say

Msteve

Re: Help needed for reference

I would also be very wary.   As msteve21 has said this type of helmet would be very rare if the paint and decals are genuine.

I've just had a quick look at Mike Davis' site and a M42 camo single decal looks like it has been sold for US$14,750.

https://www.virtualgrenadier.com/sale_item.php?iid=5363

That's a lot of cash neutral  Can you let us know what is the seller asking for the helmet that you've posted?

Regards Markus

Re: Help needed for reference

Thanks for the replies. It's up for auction, which always makes me a little wary, and from my knowledge (not as deep as I wished it was) doesn't quite seem right but wanted a second (or third!) opinion.

What are the paint features that you would expect to see on a 75yr old lid??

Firstly I'm no helmet expert these are just my thoughts;

Things to look for; rust and wear around the rim of the helmet, the overall shell should show rust patina where the paint been scratched back to the shell, this will look black due to age. Your helmet shows a little wear to the liner while the exterior paint appears quite weather worn???

As mentioned, really need to have a hands on inspection of this helmet to make a valid determination of its originality, the decals will be a big marker if its real or not

I suggest posting it on the WAF, if your not a member I can do it for you
More knowledge helmet experts on that forum

If you decide to buy it I would be asking the Auction house, if they offer a guarantee? what proof would be required for a refund?

Hopes this helps

MSteve

Re: Help needed for reference

I agree with msteve21's comments, especially listing the helmet on the WAF, where there are a number of highly experienced collectors for Waffen SS helmets.

Following some unfortunate experiences as a new collector, my genuine advice is to have your own list of checkpoints.  Some of mine are:

*  What is the reputation of the seller in the collector community?
*  What recourse do I have if the item is not what it's purported to be?
*  Do I have sufficient knowledge of an item to be confident that it is legitimate?
*  What is the prevalence of fake items of a similar type?  Many SS and DAK items are faked due to their high value.
*  Where is the seller located?  For example some countries in Eastern Europe have quite low rates of income  (USD$7,000 - $8,000 per year) compared to other nations,
so there's an incentive that if you can make USD$10,000 to $20,000 on an item for minimum outlay you can earn possibly up to 3 years income from a single transaction.
*  What is the price or price guide compared with the sales of other similar pieces - if something is not being sold for fair market value, why?

Unfortunately it takes a long time to become familiar with what legitimate items look like and no-one can be a specialist in every area of collecting.

Re: Help needed for reference

That's great help. Thank you. Something like liner wear compared to paint wear isn't actually something I considered but seems so obvious now someone has said it!
