Official Photograph of AntiTank Gun Intro to German Arsenal in Afrika.

Hi All! The caption to this Associated Press photograph is a bit confusing, but from what i can tell is that is the introduction of the towed Russian 7.62 cm Anti-Tank gun (not 88 mm PAK) to the desert theater of operation after mass captures on the Eastern Front. i can't tell if the light colored band on the cap of the central observer is strap for goggles or a sign of his testing occupation? Hope someone know more about this!hmm   Barron

Re: Official Photograph of AntiTank Gun Intro to German Arsenal in Afrika.

Nice photo Barron smile

I reckon the band on the crew member's hat may be a wider band for a set of goggles, maybe a lighter shade and has reflected some sunlight?

From reading a number of contemporary newspaper articles in Australia during the war years it's obvious that the 88mm was often mentioned in media reports - it appears there
was a fascination with it.

At least one of the photos in the AWM collection is misnamed as an 88 - it's definitely a smaller gun but I can't tell exactly what because it is disassembled.

There is also an old post from 2012 by Forum member Eddie, for Günter Halm who won the Knights Cross for an action when he was a crew member of the type of weapon in your photo.
It's a great read and has some good images.  You may have already seen this but I'll put the link here if you or other want to have a look: http://afrikakorps.forumcrea.com/viewtopic.php?id=421

Thanks for looking! Just wish they wouldn't have clipped the photograph so we could see the muzzle and the spades,  Barron

Hi Barron, I've found the same photo but with the muzzle showing.  In this one it looks like the white band may be part of the wearers bleached M40 cap that shows below the goggle strap?

I've also included a couple of other shots that may be of interest.

No worries Barron smile  Surprisingly it doesn't look like any muzzle brake on the towed version or when mounted on the Diana.
