Sole Surviving German A7V Sturmpanzerwagen - Mephisto

As part of the events to recognise the 100th Anniversary of the end of WWI, in November this year the Queensland Museum
(here in sunny Brisbane Australia) will be opening the new ANZAC Legacy Gallery.

The centerpiece of the Gallery will be ‘Mephisto’ the only surviving German A7V Sturmpanzerwagen.  The tank
was captured near Villers-Bretonneux in France in 1918 by members of the 26th Battalion AIF.

Mephisto has been displayed at the Queensland Museum since 1919; and for a short time more recently at the  Australian War Memorial in Canberra.

Mephisto recently underwent extensive conservation work and during this evidence of its use in battle was found.  This includes on the underside
of the tank a bullet strike mark, where it is believed an Allied soldier fired a round from a trench as the tank passed overhead!

Anyway, here are some photos wink  Regards Markus

Thanks Keith and Barron for the comments.  Yes Barron surf's up!   I'm going to take a visit when the new display is open in November.

I'll take the camera with me wink
