Three Sd.Kfz. 142 Sturmgeschutz III Ausf. D assault guns arrived in North Africa in early 1942 and were allocated to Sonderverband 288.

One was captured south of Gazala in April 1942 and the remaining two were captured at El Alamein in November 1942.

This is reported to be the 1st Stug captured near Gazala.

One of the Stugs captured at El Alamein was shipped back to England for evaluation.  Many years later the rusting remnants were located at
the Pirbright Firing Range and an amazing piece of work was done restoring this vehicle to its former state.
