3rd Pattern Tropical Heer Tunic Tunisia

Hi, I don't know whether you've seen a copy of this before - apologies if that's the case.   Anyway, found this on the internet this week and it is listed as being a PK photo from Tunisia in February 1943 and shows 3rd pattern tunic in use (sorry about the watermarks....).

Regards Markus.

That's a great pic, like the combination of tropical belt and the black ammo pouches
PZ EM, possible on guard duty?

Re: 3rd Pattern Tropical Heer Tunic Tunisia

Thanks Mark, would probably be the type of equipment set up for day time guard duty.  With the tie being worn I was thinking PK staged photo for the purpose of reporting news and images from the front back to Germany.

I was interested in this one as most photos you see of Heer troops in North Africa show them wearing the first pattern tunic and to a lesser degree the second pattern tunic.

Regards Markus.

Re: 3rd Pattern Tropical Heer Tunic Tunisia

Note the lapel skulls - a Panzer crewman on guard duty (PK staged, why else wear the tie).
3rd patterns certainly were introduced the previous year with the new troops sent to Tunisia. 2nd patterns earlier - but I have yet to find a dated photo of one in 1942 (I do have in my collection photos taken by a New Zealand soldier of prisoners wearing 2nd pattern tunics but in 1943). 2nd patterns must have seen service by the first third of 1942 since they were already in production late 1941 - it simply stand to reason.
Great Photo!
