Re: German Tobacco items

Thanks for looking Rich! Here is the second item I mentioned with a desert palm label. Nice and colorful compared to the other cigar box
I posted a while back. The tax stamp has been squashed but is identifiable as a pre-war eagle. Enjoy!  Barron cool

Re: German Tobacco items

Thanks for looking! I always like to get an early war and a wartime tax stamp example of an item and got lucky with this one having a tropical theme. Wonder where the tobacco for the cigars came from on this one which is usually shown?! hmm  Barron

Re: German Tobacco items

I second mSteve21's comments!

The old Krokodil-Oriient mild file cut tobacco - when the only the best will do!

I always find it fascinating that the German language is so similar with many English words (e.g. Krokodil = crocodile).

From what I've read about 60% of the words in the English language are derived from German and that English, Dutch and
I think Afrikaans as well are all grouped as Germanic languages.

Anyway, I've digressed!  Barron, you might find these links interesting.  The first is about the supply of tobacco to Germany during WWII -
I often wondered how it got past the Allied blockade...

http://smith-wessonforum.com/lounge/898 … o-ww2.html

The second one is about the official party view on the use of tobacco, which I found remarkable!

No worries Barron, as a lifelong student of history I always try to gather some context behind each item I collect.

Re: German Tobacco items

Here is another variety of "Overstoltz" tropical tobacco tin that I recently acquired. Both are steel but has a visible coating that didn't work very well and the other in natural looking metal. The coated one almost looks like it was painted /coated in tropical olive green? Hope you will enjoy! smile  Barron

Re: German Tobacco items

Nice items Barron, thanks for posting.  You're probably aware - but from a bit of quick research this morning
I've learned that Haus Neuerburg was a major tobacco /cigarette manufacturer in Germany and is notable for the embossed
metal tins that it's products were sold in.

The Güldenring (golden ring) cigarette was one of it's mainstay cigarette products.

My favourite is the first (Güldenring) can due to the amount of embossed detail - it looks to good to be disposed of after the cigarettes
were finished, which is probably why these survived and were reused for other purposes wink

The company of Haus Neuerburg was eventually taken over by a US company, which was later itself taken over by Japan International Tobacco...

Regards Markus.

The Güldenring can probably had an original paper seal, which looked like this one..

Here is a contemporary advertisement from the mid 1930's selling the virtues of the Haus Neuerburg tropical packaging in preserving the
aroma and freshness of the contents..
