OPINIONS OH HAND STITCHED BREAST EAGLES

Hoping I can some feedback on  hand applied tropical eagles

VG has a 1st pattern for sale with hand applied breast eagle

http://virtualgrenadier.com/sale_item.php?iid=4542

No signs of another eagle ever been applied, so I'm guessing it was done by a select few tunic manufactures.

Let us know what your thoughts are smile

Cheers

Msteve

I would expect the quality of sewing to be superior to this example. I have examined several early all-hand sewn eagles on tunics with provenance, and in each case the stitching was superb.

Re: OPINIONS OH HAND STITCHED BREAST EAGLES

I agree. The Litzen are perfectly finished by a skillful hand whilst the eagle and chevron are not.
I have a cap that had the eagle removed and i took it to my tailor to have one restored. He never did this before and i had given him another untouched example to get the idea of what i wanted. In 10 minutes he applied the eagle flawlessly exactly like it should be.
Therefore it's hard to believe that a worker in a factory who applied thousands of insignia could have these results on the eagle and chevron hmm

Re: OPINIONS OH HAND STITCHED BREAST EAGLES

Thank you for your comments Mark and Chris

I have an example to show that I've always considered to have a replaced breast eagle

That said, on closer inspection it is clearly seen that the breast eagle (hand sewn) and collar tabs, have been applied with the same identical cotton as used on reinforcing the reverse of the collar

There is no sign of another breast eagle been sewn onto the tunic

Pics of the breast eagle and collar tab application

I find it interesting that this is one aspect of DAK collecting which their is so little documented about

Hi Mark,
the photo (quality and angle) is not the best therefore i cannot form an opinion about it.
Cheers

Re: OPINIONS OH HAND STITCHED BREAST EAGLES

Application is not consistant with original examples of hand sewn eagles that i have seen. That said the eagle appears settled into the fabric and the thread used is the same as the tabs. Therefore can not say with 100% certainty but looks promising overall. What year is the tunic dated ?

Re: OPINIONS OH HAND STITCHED BREAST EAGLES

Thanks for your reply Tim
Tunic dated 42, 1st pattern
looked at the stitching under a 300 + magnifying glass, shows no sign of previous eagle application

Re: OPINIONS OH HAND STITCHED BREAST EAGLES

Agree with Tim.
I don't like the overall application and i would say it's been reapplied but the thread makes me having second thoughts. Maybe a poor application at the factory from a novice worker?

Re: OPINIONS OH HAND STITCHED BREAST EAGLES

Thanks Msteve for the date. was kinda hoping for a '41 date that might explain the eagle application better. But now its 50/50% at best as i would expect a hand sewn eagle from '42 to be better than this ? Still the threads used are the same and that is a good sign. The initial holes can be covered up fairly well by steaming the jacket....not saying thats the case here but always a possiility.

cheers
Tim

Re: OPINIONS OH HAND STITCHED BREAST EAGLES

Best way to clearly see existing holes is by placing a torch behind the fabric. The light penetrates where holes are evident. But indeed as Mark(NZ) says the cotton fabric closes fairly well after a few washes. Don't know about Tim's suggestion with steaming but this could work the same.
