1942 German Topographical Manuals of Northwest Africa.

I was looking through some of my library and thought these might be of interest to this forum. They were produced just before the "Torch" landings occurred covering most of French North Africa. Hope you will enjoy!  smile   Barron

Re: 1942 German Topographical Manuals of Northwest Africa.

Hi Barron,
basically it's a booklet with maps? Or does it also contain photos of the troops, vehicles etc?

Re: 1942 German Topographical Manuals of Northwest Africa.

It is series of books showing and describing the area in photographs in one volume and separately in text in the other volume of a slightly different area? Probably in preparation of invasion? Thanks for asking!

Re: 1942 German Topographical Manuals of Northwest Africa.

I have something like this; it's a book with aerial photographs of Tunisia, published in Berlin 1943.  "Luftgeographische Beschreibung der Atlaslander, 1 Band, Tunesien".  Paperback with orange covers and tons of black and white photos, approximately 80-100 pages.

Also have a 1944 dated coastal map set for Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia, "Karten des Bodenbeschaffen heit des Meeres fur das Gebiet des westlichen Mittelmeeres, 1. Mappe:  Die Kusten von Morokko, Algerien und Tunesien"

I really like maps and navigational charts for some odd reason.  Don't ask me to explain....

Re: 1942 German Topographical Manuals of Northwest Africa.

Very interesting T ! smile Can you post some pics of 1943 one especially? Wonder why the Germans would have produced the 1944 edition since they were long gone from Africa, unless it was for bomber aircraft? hmm  Barron

Re: 1942 German Topographical Manuals of Northwest Africa.

Regarding the Kriegsmarine navigational charts, they were older charts that were reprinted in 1944 for ongoing operations in the Mediterranean, particularly U-boat operations against British shipping through the Strait of Gibraltar.

Lifted from the most reliable internet information source, Wiki....  wink

Mediterranean U-boat Campaign: 1941–1944

The Mediterranean U-boat Campaign lasted approximately from 21 September 1941 to May 1944. The Kriegsmarine tried to isolate Gibraltar, Malta, and Suez and disrupt Britain's trade routes. More than sixty U-boats were sent to interdict Allied shipping in the Mediterranean Sea. Many of these U-boats were themselves attacked negotiating the Strait of Gibraltar controlled by Britain. Nine U-boats were sunk while attempting passage and ten more were damaged.

Re: 1942 German Topographical Manuals of Northwest Africa.

Thank you for the explanation of purpose of maps. I saw Luft and thought immedeately of Luftwaffe not Kreigsmarine! Also thought that Germans were unsuccessful at their attempt to get U-Bootes back into the Med as illustrated in the movie "Das Boote".

Militaria and maps go together. I really like period photos of Generals and officers studying a map before making a move towards the enemy.

I would if I could post photos directly to this site.  I haven't set up an account with a third party photo hosting site.  I could email photos to you if you are interested.  PM your contact info to me and I'll try to get some photos together in the next few days

Tom, no need to register to a host site. Actually that is not the ideal thing to do.

It's much better to upload photos directly using the forum's uploader.

Re: 1942 German Topographical Manuals of Northwest Africa.

If you right click on a photo in your hard disk, does it say jpeg? Maybe it's in another format?

If you have a DSLR camera check that you are not shooting at the RAW option.

Furthermore the limit of the size is only 220kb so you need to resize prior uploading the file.

Re: 1942 German Topographical Manuals of Northwest Africa.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the reply.  The photos are all JPEG format (I seldom use RAW unless I'll be processing the images).  I have tried to load the smallest file size allowed without success.  I suspect there is a file root that the uploader cannot recognize, so I'll have to play with some work-around solutions when I get the time.

I'll be deleting my posts that add nothing to this thread in a day or so.  I don't want to clog the thread up with a public airing of my technical difficulties, but do want to acknowledge and thank you for your advice.

Re: 1942 German Topographical Manuals of Northwest Africa.

Hi Tom, better don't delete them as it could help others who have the same issues. We almost always derail from thread subjects in this forum so don't worry about that.

We have threads starting discussions about militaria and ending posting photos about football lol

I will send you an email and reply with one of your files attached so that i can see what is going on.

Re: 1942 German Topographical Manuals of Northwest Africa.

Thank you all for your comments and interest in this subject of topographical items that is high on my interest scale naturally! I used to draw maps when I was in seventh grade and made war games on North African campaign in High School. Even got an A grade in an English class for developing a game on Tunisia. Another English class on Mythology the teacher served under Patton in Tunisia and the Ardennes! Definitely got my interest going! big_smile  Barron

Tom nice to see that you are getting there.

When you copy/paste the link in the thread make sure that it's the one of the photo not the one of the thumbnail.
