Tropical Signal Insignia

Hi folks, here is a photo of some tropical signal blitz insignia which I've been collecting over the last couple of years.  The one on the right hand side is white blitz stitching on a lighter coloured olive background patch (Heer Flak).   Yes, still a few more to go ....

Re: Tropical Signal Insignia

Awesome collection Mark. Well done and thanks for sharing.

What i don't understand is why there are no used/tunic removed blitzes today? Even litzen are rarely found in a tunic removed condition but i have never seen a single blitz in that used condition.

Re: Tropical Signal Insignia

Thanks Chris, yes the blitzes which I have seen for sale have all been in unissued condition - unless still attached to the complete original uniform item.    Maybe not a lot of these were sewn own to tropical uniforms (I haven't seen many in period photos) and insignia like the tunic eagle much more eagerly sought as souvenirs?

Regards Mark

Indeed eagles and boards were more appreciated as souvenirs than Litzen and blitz patches.

Re: Tropical Signal Insignia

I remember one of the reasons I stopped posting here, the pain that it is to post images of a decent size. Anyway, if anyone is interested I would sell the blitz collection as one lot, message me on War Relics, WAF or HWF forums.

Re: Tropical Signal Insignia

My tropical signal blitz collection has grown a little...

http://afrikakorps.forumcrea.com/img/avatars/afrikakorps/big/2587_dsc02525.jpg

This next photo shows the variety of finishes to the reverse.  As you can see a number appear to have been previously been glued into photo albums or display boards etc...

http://afrikakorps.forumcrea.com/img/avatars/afrikakorps/big/2587_dsc02529.jpg

These badges are still a great entry level collectible and reasonably priced...

Impressive collection, nice seeing the different construction techniques. Are the top line later manufactured?

Re: Tropical Signal Insignia

Hi, the top line are all for the tropical Mantel (greatcoat).

The middle and bottom lines are for the tropical tunic.  I've found that the blitzes in the middle row (lighter twill with the darker surround) seem to be harder to find.

This photo helps to show the difference - the Mantel blitz is on the left.

Re: Tropical Signal Insignia

I recently acquired this postcard format portrait of a German NCO wearing what appears to be a newly issued tropical uniform.

The postcard is filled in on the reverse and dated May 1942, with the location of Athens (Greece).  I’m thinking that from the very dark colour of the cap soutache and the general assault award that he was a Pionier.

Of interest to me is that the subject of the photo is wearing a tropical signal blitz on his tunic – this appears to be the format with the tan centre material and the darker green edge border.

Almost all of the photo’s that I’ve personally seen of signal blitzes being worn on tropical uniforms appear to be continental blitz versions, not the tropical ones.

Why aren’t there more photos of the tropical blitz being used?

I’d be interested if anyone could post a photo of a tropical signal blitz being worn in North Africa.

Regards
Markus

Re: Tropical Signal Insignia

Lack of photos could indicate tropical blitz's may not been not issued until 42, by then it would have been difficult in getting them out into the field or troops were not motivated to add the patch to a battle worn uniform, possibly keeping it for later, just a though

Re: Tropical Signal Insignia

Thanks Mark, yes they were some of my thoughts.  Probably more important to have rank badges sewn on.

The Sudfront (Italy etc) studio portraits that I've been looking at online recently which have included a blitz badge on a tropical tunic have mostly been continental badges.

However, based on the date on the postcard it appears that the tropical version was available from at least mid 1942.

Here's what appears to possibly be another light tan signal blitz on a tropical tunic worn in southern Europe.  This could be the version with the light tan
border and unfortunately the lightning symbol itself is not distinct in the photo......

http://afrikakorps.forumcrea.com/img/avatars/afrikakorps/big/2587_blitz.jpg

Possibly this type of lighter coloured material blitz being worn in this photo as mentioned above...
http://afrikakorps.forumcrea.com/img/avatars/afrikakorps/big/2587_blitz1.jpg

However, it's hard to tell with the angle and it may also be an all tan Oberschutze rank badge, like this one ...

Re: Tropical Signal Insignia

Well folks, this is the only photo I've been able to find of any form of signal blitz being worn in North Afrika.

These look to be continental signal blitz's attached to the tropical uniforms of a couple of soldiers who are perched
on the front of a Sdfkz 223 of 15th Panzer Division (Robert Kurtz book on Afrikakorps Uniforms, Insignia & Equipment p. 25).

Regards Markus.

Re: Tropical Signal Insignia

I came across this picture tonight - a Panzer NCO wearing a tropical uniform hanging out of the side of an armoured vehicle.

On his lower right sleeve appears to be a continental Funkmeister (radio master) trade badge with surrounding silver cord for NCO rank.  Anyone seen this before?

You don't see very many trade patches on German tropical uniforms so this appears to be a rarity.

First I've seen of this type of badge being worn on a tropical tunic - I'm assuming North Africa ....

Interesting photographs! Love those gas masks on the headlights of the armored car plus the guys looking like they may be brothers if not twins! neutral  Barron
