Wow! Beautiful! Thank you for sharing the wonderful illustrations of your wonderful set-up! Very inspirational as Italian tropical items sure seem to be scarcer than German tongue   Barron

Wonderful!
Hi zip! I need a cockade for my casco coloniale m40, do you know where to get one in the correct size? By the way, which was the correct diameter?
Thanks and regards.

Re: Italian infantryman, 40° RGT, Divisione Bologna. El Alamein Battle

The correct diameter was 5 cm for em and 8 cm for Officer.
However, this rule was not always respected.
Maybe I have a new Officer cockade... I have to search it in my headgear collection, would you make a change?

Re: Italian infantryman, 40° RGT, Divisione Bologna. El Alamein Battle

Hi erel
you have a very nice pith helmet mod. 1928.
Did you remounted it, or you find it so?
The cockade is too big. cockade like this where used in parade, but not in combat. In combat soldier used the small one (5 cm) or the badge only. ( for camouflage )
Probably this helmet is correct for the Africa campaign of 1935-36, where this regiment fought with tropical uniform.
This regiment was part of the Sforzesca Division.
During WWII in 1940 was in France near Briançon.
then in 1941 fought in Albania
in 1942 it has been sent in Russia where he fought at Tschebotareskij, Kalisnoskij, Napulov. At Millerowo he was destroyed by the Russians.

Here you can see some pics of a combat uniform of a Lieutenant when arrived in Russia and a bustina when as captain came back home. ( only a few soldiers was able to go home! )

note the rank in the last pic, every star was a single piece because the officer adds one to each promotion.

Here is his combat helmet, you can see the unit mark under the liner.

Re: Italian infantryman, 40° RGT, Divisione Bologna. El Alamein Battle

Hi Zip, The pith helmet is rebadged.
I knew about german pith helmets but nothing about italians, but when when I saw them Ifell in love.
My idea was mounting an african campaign pith with all his charming details.
The inside of the helmet is not green, is it a model 28?
Would you rework it of leave it this way?
Thanks for images and story of the regiment (sad story)
Regards!

Re: Italian infantryman, 40° RGT, Divisione Bologna. El Alamein Battle

ciao erel
your helmet is a mod. 28, but unfortunately it has a kaki inside.
The majority of the collectors says that these kaki model are postwar made. Only a few person argue that this is not true! but I have never seen a WWII pith helmet without the green inside.
I have seen you have sewn the cockade to the helmet, this is not correct, it was connected to the helmet by the badge.

Re: Italian infantryman, 40° RGT, Divisione Bologna. El Alamein Battle

Hi Zip. Thanks for your advice!
I did´t want to make  big holes in the cork nor weaken the fregio brackets, so sewed the fregio to the cockade and the cockade to the helmet with minor damage.
Maybe this helmets were never used and stored in depots, anybody knows?
I´ll look for a green interior one, thank you so much!!!
