Re: How about them Pith Helmets!

Rather a lot of images for this one, but all are ones I would have found useful when I was thinking of buying it. The tropenhelm is cork. It looks like the same model as Magpie’s GI signed example (compare the riveted, aluminium vent). It has faded to a sandy yellow from a light, but slightly greener colour. Notice the stitching which remains a darker green. The shields are unmatched. The eagle is fresher and thicker than the national colours and has aluminium pins. It looks like a replacement (there are two pins but three holes). The national colours is more weathered, thinner, and has thin brass pins. It uses all three holes and looks original. The leather trim around the brim of the helmet has a green surface and is very thin (<1mm). The strap is of the same colour and, unusually, has a rectangular, rather than a D-shaped buckle at the end. The leather sweat band/ liner is marked ‘W.&F.B.,N.’ on the left hand side (below the the pins of the eagle shield), and on the inside at the front ‘342’ or ‘942’ (a date?) and ‘58’, the helmet size. There is also a sticker with the size. Inside the leather sweatband/ liner is a ring of felt padding sewn to a red ?cardboard former. The leather is glued and sewn to the latter. The leather joins at the back of the helmet, the seam reinforced with a thin brown cloth, and sewn with a zigzag stitch. The liner is attached to four rivets around the helmet with removable pins identical to those shown in the Assmann catalogue. The vent seems to be aluminium.
The helmet is is an ebay purchase. The sweatband/ liner has a circular stamp, which reads 'SA....NG COLLECTION' around the margin and 'DODKINS' in the middle, but otherwise it has no meaningful provenance. Your comments please.
An aside query about cloth covered wicker framed tropenhelms — are any of these dated?

A worn 'wicker' one. Not really wicker.

Re: How about them Pith Helmets!

Hi Magpie! The chinstrap is a replacement of the original, wich was ripped away (But an accurate replecement piece made by me!)
The eagle is also a zinc alloy repro eagle placed into original holes, but the shield is an original ASSMANN.
Do you know where can I find period images of this Tropenhelm in use?
I,ve got only one picture.
Thanks and regards!

Re: How about them Pith Helmets!

Hi Magpie! Would you share those photos?  The helmet came to me with the shield (Maybe post war added) and eagle badge holes (Maybe post war added)
But I would like to leave it as it was used by luftwaffe, removing badges if necessary. The problem is to find photographic evidences. . .
Thanks a lot and regards!

Re: How about them Pith Helmets!

Hi, this is UNDER luft eagle. Three surface marks, not really holes, disposed in triangle, apparently marking the place of a standard shield (Althoug they don´t match any german badge pin, they are too near)
In your opinion, could these be factory markings to "suggest" the shield fitters where to put them? Maybe these shields never were placed?
By my experience handling them, Frech blue piths were "cheaply" manufactured in materials and manufacture. Not many attention for details!(As logic)

Thanks for your time!

Re: How about them Pith Helmets!

Tnaks for sharing, Tim!
In your opinion, should I "unbadge" the tropenhelm? So the only "replaced" part would be the chinstrap?
I can assure you that the strap is faithfully copied, except for that the leather is better than the cheap original one! I even reproduced the blackened steel brackets to fix it to the body.

If I may, how did you replace the chinstrap? Where were you able to find one?

You misread my post, I replaced both the shields, not the chinstrap.

Gotcha...where did you find replacement shields? I am looking to do the same on a KM tropenhelm which is missing the chinstrap and had repro shields.

Re: How about them Pith Helmets!

Hi Petigny!
Does it have markings in the sweatband?
I can´t read the markings in the ventilation dome screw.
It looks like the holes for the shields pins are grommeted, may be postwar alteration?
The sweatband is fixed with four detachable rivets (Early war, Heer)
Which color is the leather rim? And the chinstrap?
Is it made of cork or straw?

It looks like the holes for the shields pins are grommeted, may be postwar alteration? yes this is my problem : the grommets !

The sweatband is fixed with four detachable rivets (Early war, Heer)

Which color is the leather rim? And the chinstrap? Brown i think ...

Is it made of cork or straw? i don't known ...

Re: How about them Pith Helmets!

Your pith is made by "KELLER & CO", here you´ve got a link about one of these in Wehrmacht Awards Forum:
http://www.wehrmacht-awards.com/forums/ … p?t=566880
In accordance to this link, some of these helmets were sold outside Germany while found in stock warehouses.
I think that the grommets were added after removing the shields (Maybe to hide military provenence post war and sell the helmets in Germany)
Let´s wait for more opinions.

Re: How about them Pith Helmets!

Hello all, first day on the forum here! smile I've always loved the German pith helmets, it was a lot of fun looking at the more rare ones here. Here is the only one I have in my collection right now. Made by JHS which is more seen on the 2nd patterns. This one is nothing but salty,  paid $175 for it, think I did okay.

First time posting on a forum, hope the pictures will turn out okay... Thanks for looking! cool

Re: How about them Pith Helmets!

May I ask for some help on reshaping this hat that I showed above? I was told to remove the liner and gently steam it with distilled water, but I'm not sure how to remove the liner? Thanks in advance!

Re: How about them Pith Helmets!

Hi Ran. Personally i wouldn't touch it. It's part of it's character. Besides if you disassemble it you might end up with a destroyed helmet hmm

Re: How about them Pith Helmets!

Thanks Chris! That's also one of the reasons why I haven't touched it. Now I'm certain that I will keep this hat the way it is!

Cheers,
