It is a rayon material, but not the silver gray ersatz silk seen usually.  A friend has an einheitsfeld mutz dated 43 and its lined in that oatmeal gray cotton duck.
This cap has features that are very similar to the Bergmutz; shorter visor, taller crown, the ends of the flaps with the buttons and holes are not rounded (?). Could be a hybrid I guess.


One thing I've learned about German WWII militaria - you can never say "It was always this way" - or - "They never did that." Soon as you do you find you are wrong.
