WW1 M16 Stahlhelm Cover!

I have blown the budget over the last few weeks but i am happy for it tongue
Below is one of my budget blowers that i would like to show as it's interesting in the fact that it is heavily faded?
This cover must have seen a bit of sun, when i first had a look at it i thought it may have been for the snow
as it is almost white. But not until i had it in hand that the inside is still grey in colour.

And when i put it on my WW1 Palestine display it matches almost perfectly in colour, so this maybe a possibility, (pics attached).
It is marked inside to the 91st Infantry Regiment plus M.G.K. for Machine Gun Company (Maschinengewehr-Kompanie) which makes it interesting also.
But i have checked the Units that were sent to Palestine and the 91st is not listed? But i suppose it is possible that another soldier may have picked it up on the battlefield and then his Unit was sent to Palestine, this type of fading would not happen in Northen France or Belgium i don't think?
I have also tried looking up information on the 91st Infantry Regiment but what i have found does not tell me which theatres they served?
There is another blue coloured stamp below which is probably the maker mark & maybe date but it's faded and rubbed off. It is a five piece construction with three
back panels sewn in the fashion of the back of a tunic.
There are some rust stains with one that from the inside can clearly be seen in the shape of a circle and lines up with the front left liner lug, so it has been left on a helmet for
a very long time. There is a rust run on the other side below where that lug would have rusted from under the lug and there is a wear mark on the material
at the back. As the back lugs on the WW1 Stahlhelms was thicker than the front two, so this has rubbed and frayed the material.

Don't worry about the black helmet the cover is on for the photos, it's just an original that didn't have much paint on it and was just a shell which i used for my
repro Allgemeine SS display i have. It's the smallest helmet i have that the cover will fit on which makes sense really as these covers were not issued until later
in the war and by this time they were down to the 15, 16 & 17 year old kids of non-military age to keep up the numbers as they were running out of men sad

Anyway these covers a very rare and hard to find, there are some repros out there but they always look wrong, but as you can see this one is original no question about it
and fits this original helmet perfectly. Fits like a glove as they say wink

Cheers
Stu

That is a wonderful very unique complete setup, great cover to top it off. I have collected German headgear for 40 some years and know how rare that cover is. Love the wear and the MG. markings inside.

Re: WW1 M16 Stahlhelm Cover!

Sorry Dawn Patrol, you must have been typing the same time as me and your reply just sneaked in before mine smile
So thank you & Seb for your replys, and yes Dawn Patrol i never thought i would get one of these covers. The only problem now is that i have to get another grey M16
in a small size 60-66 for the cover to fit hmm
I have attached a few other photos that i didn't upload yesterday for you to have a look at, there are two vertical darts at the front that also go horizontal at the top for about an inch which is interesting. There is a lot of detail in the construction of this cover.
