Re: Souvenir hunter pictures

Wherpass to a Soldier in Infantry Btl 425 but looks like he was transferred several times and ended up in Btl 362, and a war merit cross 2nd class.
Brought back and given to me by a radio operator in the Royal Armored Corps many years ago, and got me interested in WW2 militaria and collecting.

He also had several photo's from KIA's including a German Paratrooper and most interesting was a letter he actually sent home to his mother at the time it wouldn't be passed by the censors now:
It described an action in Italy just after crossing the Scerlerno river  (sorry not sure how that is spelt ) he said we meaning the tanks were moping up followed by Infantry we came to a couple of farm houses the first was empty but from the 2nd came fire at us, on returning fire they soon gave up the fight and four German soldiers came out with their hands up. Two of our Infantry went forward to take their surrender but one of the Germans tried to grab the rifle of the first soldier the 2nd Infantry man immediately shot and killed him and wounded one of the other Germans. The other two Germans kept their hands up and were OK. These are the photo's I took from the dead German please put them with my other souvenirs, I don't understand why he threw his life away like this.
He actually met his wife in Algiers and was married shortly after the war he had many souvenirs but most were stolen when they were put on display at a local scouts club.

Hi Eddie,

Great photos, I don't think I have seen some of these before so thanks for posting them. Do you know anything about the photo that has British troops dressed up in German tropical kit?

Have you ever seen German soldiers in woolen battle dress in any photos from North Africa? I have seen quite a few of German troops in captured British shirts and shorts and I believe that it would have been a common thing when german kit was not issued.

Dsmile

Hi the soldiers with the German uniforms on are recently liberated New Zealand prisoners of war back at a base camp in Egypt. I can understand captured shirts and shorts being used by both sides, but the British woolen battle dress would be too distinguishable and might get you shot by your own side ! This happened with US troops wearing the camo uniforms ( type usually seen in the pacific ) shortly after D-Day as they were similar to the waffen SS camo uniforms.

Re: Souvenir hunter pictures

US Sailors with helmets from North Africa one is possibly a French or an Italian M26 model. Also visible Hermann Göring division cufftitle.

http://i1166.photobucket.com/albums/q602/DAKEddie41/1098523_162708337253009_1622045116_n_zps6c513e35.jpg

Same 3 sailors in what looks like a posed photo for a US magazine one clearly has an Italian M33 helmet.

Excellent photos Eddie and thanks for posting these on the forum.  I'm particularly looking at the piles of captured helmets which include a number of 'raw edge' models.

Do you think this is the same AFV behind the large flag in your latest group of photo's?
