DAK Portrait Photo Steel Helmet !

Super rare period postcard-sized picture, showing a soldier in tropical tunic wearing a tropical (ie. yellowish-tan coloured) M40 steel-helmet.
The photo (sized 13,5 x 8,5 cms.) shows some interesting uniform details such as the early model tropical ie. DAK tunic, the tropical shirt and ‘tropical’-type shoulderboards. The photo is void of any written text apart from a signature to the front  and just shows an inked date: ’26-9-1943’ on the reverse (making it most likely a picture taken in Italy or Balkan). A most welcome addition to my collection I may try and sell some copies of this picture being so rare but posted here for AFRIKAKORPS FORUM members only ! Does anyone else have a similar photo to sell or share ?

Re: DAK Portrait Photo Steel Helmet !

Very good pic.  I saw some interesting ones posted on another forum recently.  One a first pattern tunic with a 2nd pattern tropenhelm and the other had the soldier wearing a British Wolsely Pith helmet with a painted tri colour shield.

Re: DAK Portrait Photo Steel Helmet !

Fantastic image. Note how fresh the uniform is - no creases etc. Brand spanking new....certainly looks like a model 1940 helmet - hardly any wear to it, either. One sent home to the loved ones....

Re: DAK Portrait Photo Steel Helmet !

Thanks for comments about the photo nice to find something you don't see every day, I think it's the cheapest tan painted M40 I'll ever find for sure ! Most DAK items I'd like are out of my price range now but these portrait photo's are affordable and make a nice collection. Watch out  for some on eBay though as they are reprints some of the pictures I have even seen in books and they are selling them as original photo's and sell the same image over and over ! I think a section on the forum asking opinions on eBay items would be good and would help members both finding items they might not otherwise see and guard against buying something perhaps not as stated in the description like the photo's I mentioned. Will have another couple of photo postcards to post soon including DAK officer with field cap and Knights cross + oak leaves.

Re: DAK Portrait Photo Steel Helmet !

Another portrait photo with steel helmet no visible breast eagle so SS or field Police man possibly ? not an SS style tunic so more likely police.

Re: DAK Portrait Photo Steel Helmet !

Eddie,
I'm picking LW. Note the top collar button-hole and tan/mustard painted buttons...
There are many images of LW troops with tunics minus the eagle. This raises a few questions regarding supply/issue to LW troops and personalization(?)
That helmet looks a little on the small side!

Re: DAK Portrait Photo Steel Helmet !

Eddie,
As always - Wonderful images. I've especially liked the troops trudging along with the PzB. Dirty, pissed off....really shows the gritty side to soldiering.
