I can't quite make out the RB# - Could you tell me what it is, please? I may be able to tie it to a manufacturer.
Great photos, too - and the portrait of the soldier in tropical uniform is wonderful...any inscription or date on the reverse?
Cheers!
Mark

Hello Mark, The RB-Nr is 0/0678/5015 it would be great to find out the manufacturer thanks ! As for the portrait photo there is no writing on the back only the makers name MimoSa. Here are some clearer pics of it and another two I used to own I would have kept the colour one if he'd had his cap on for sure.
I have seen a couple of nice caps on websites so will post the pics on here someone might be interested.

Nice selection of caps - and that last m40 variant is exceptionally under-priced for a maker marked Kern variant cap!!

Re: WWII German Tropical Caps - An Overview.

Hi Eddie,
Indeed it is my m40 variant. The lining has a name 'ORAM' hand written in it but no maker's mark, but without any doubt a Kern. This one was issued and shows all the right signs of wear...I was fortunate to be offered this cap several years ago for a low amount as it 'is not a standard' m40 - and it's originality was even questioned.
I won't part with it.

They had tropical uniforms and I would assume that would include chaplains.

Re: WWII German Tropical Caps - An Overview.

Hi Gentlemen,
Just found this site while mooching around trying to find some info on a DAK cap that I have been offered. Can anyone give me any info and, most importantly, advise as to its authenticity (or otherwise)? I have taken some pics but am unable to upload them - you can see them at http://s575.photobucket.com/albums/ss19 … ript1/DAK/
Thanks for your help,
Simon

Re: WWII German Tropical Caps - An Overview.

Thanks Eddie,
The use of Heer caps by the LW was fairly common - some simply covered the Heer adler with a shirt eagle, removed the original and placed the appropriate example etc...
I'm not 100% certain the portrait image above shows an m40 variant...I see a line running above the cockade which fades off then sweeps up to the grommet?
Really nice photo - I'd like to have that in the collection...

Re: WWII German Tropical Caps - An Overview.

The em looks very similar to the current fakes been sold on Ebay de
The aging on the liner looks inconsistent, especially around the sides, show no wear at all. I agree with Mark opinion on this cap

May be a section on known fakes would be useful as a reference guide

Re: WWII German Tropical Caps - An Overview.

Good idea regarding another section or thread on known fakes doing the circuit for future reference.
I'll let the cap images stand as they are educational - and that's what this threads about, I hope?! smile

Re: WWII German Tropical Caps - An Overview.

Found one a cotton twill light weight m40 no tears no intense wear the body almost a tan white while the inside bill A light tan. The shadows left were a shade darker then the bleached out body there was a circle and as trifold eagle shadow where the original insignia once was. I was a little confused as to what I could use to put this hat in my dak kriegsmarine costal arty collection . The red cotton liner  pushed me towards a standard dak army setting. I knew that the Luftwaffe had  the same trifold eagle pacth on their dak m40,s but the color confused me not having anything to go off of. Well I certainly wish I would have found your article before I spent a few bucks on the patches. Since then I have completed a nice desert collection most items are for the kriegsmarine costal arty boys though. I have started a extensive head gear collection and  some other German and allied mannequins are now complete but the Dak items have become the purest part of my collection.                     Thanku for your informative post and excuse my  lousy spelling and grammer 23 years in the usarmy didn't help improve a thing in that area I would like to leave a few pics but cant figure out how as I am new  here.  Ps managed to post some pic,s on my profile page feel free to visit

Hi Garry,
Let's not forget that the LW boys used Heer m40's when required?
Cheers!

Hi Mark

What a fantastic cap. It does not get much better than that. Do you know who the maker is?

Re: WWII German Tropical Caps - An Overview.

Thanks Barry,
No markings left but I'd say Gustav Thomas. The Heer eagle is still under the LW one, but I can't see how it was applied....
Cheers!

Re: WWII German Tropical Caps - An Overview.

Hi Guys

Here is my latest addition. I bought this cap a while ago but only picked it up this week. It had post-war applied continental Heer insignia which was removed and there was a clear shadow of a Luft eagle on the front. I have tacked on the Luft insignia for the picture. I have always loved the faded/bleached caps.
