Re: Tropical photographs and other images collection

Great shots guys! It's always a thrill to see unpublished pictures. If only they could talk! Here is the only one I have. Not from North Afrika, but of a young Soldat that my german grandmother, Hedwig (Hedy) Wessels, knew from from her home town Bremerhaven during the war. She served in the Luftwaffe as a Flak Helferin 1944-45 in a range finding section with an 88 Flak-Batterie stationed on the northern edge of Bremen. Her friend served in Italy and the picture was taken in September 1943. Interestingly, he is wearing an HJ-Leistungsabzeichen in silver on his shirt...which is a rare combo. Enjoy!

Re: Tropical photographs and other images collection

I have this copy of signal on it's way to me, an iconic and well known image.  Interesting how the eagle appears to have been attached, different to what I remember seeing.  Maybe Mark will know something to go with this unusual application?

Jerry

Re: Tropical photographs and other images collection

Hi Jerry,
Agree - An iconic image! The eagle is a mystery. Is it simply a case of the photo having been incorrectly 'touched-up' for the publication (as it clearly has been) or is it, indeed, a very early variation of the eagles application on what must be a 1940 dated tunic? (Note the magazines date - June, 1941).
I've never seen an eagle with the top edge 'clipped' like that - and it would go against the natural shape of the woven insignia to do so - let alone not being consistant with the National insignia seen on service tunics up to that point. It would also be harder to apply, creating a large 'bulk' under the tucked edge which could only be negated by literally cutting that top corner off before folding it under, then stitching it down. Not practical.
But here we have a photo of it!
I wonder if perhaps the twill's creasing at that point created an illusion of a 'straight' bend of the eagles top line that has been touched up - incorrectly - by the publishers graphic department?
Any other ideas, folks?
Regards,
Mark

Re: Tropical photographs and other images collection

Thanks Mark for the prompt and insightful reply.  You are probably right, that it's a bad photo retouch that makes the eagle look odd.

Another two magazine covers, that I did not buy when I saw them, one with the same image as on the signal and the other the same as one of the post cards I posted previously.  You get to see a bit more of his outfit and equipment on the second version of the Signal cover image.  Tan pouches and a web belt.

Regards,

Jerry

Wonderful pic! I wonder if the bandana covering his mouth and nose is an issue item? If so...does anyone have one in their collection? Would oove to obtain one for my collection!

Re: Tropical photographs and other images collection

Yes i love that image on the Signal magazine cover, it always reminds me of those sand fighters in the first STAR WARS movie
and i often think to myself if the idea of those characters came from this photo???
Wessels, yes i have got a book here with images of a scarf they were issued with as seen on the Signal magazine cover as
it was long enough to go around your whole head. But this is going off a uniform reference book so not sure if locally made
or issued and to what extent as a lot of other original photos show all types of scarfs and head wraps??? The photos i refer to
are in that classic reference book AFRIKAKORPS with the blue cover with DAK soldier on front wearing faded officers tunic and
cap holding binoculars. Here it is Tropical uniforms of the German Army 1940-1945 HISTOIRE & COLLECTIONS page 9 first photo
with the DAK Tie's they are just calling it the protective scarf plus the guy modeling the uniform on page 8 has one wrapped around his face.
I have also been looking out for one so i can do a display to look exactly like the soldier on the front of the Signal magazine is doing
as i was lucky enough to get the Navy Goggles as shown in my M40 Erel cap photos.

Cheers
Stu

A member on another forum coloured a copy of this picture for me.  Looks good, though I think the belt is not quite right, but I did not mention that to him.  Still looks great to me.

BMW....Brigette mitt Wanda??
Like the colourised image as well - a few colour mistakes as noted - the zelt tent should also be green tints as per continental, not browned - but a better effort than I could do!

Re: Tropical photographs and other images collection

A new arrival today.

It's a photograph from Lybia. It says...:
"Erinnerung:
Aufenthalt in Misrata
am 16.4.1941
Bild 30"
...meaning:
"A memory:
Stay at Misrata
on 16 April 1941
Picture 30"

Lots of great pics Eddie.  The ones with the US vehicles might be after Kasserine pass I would guess.

The panzer pic with the tropenhelms is a really good shot.

North Africa, November 1941. An 8,8-cm Flak gun of a german Luftwaffe ground unit was hit on the shield by a british 40-mm tank grenade.
