M42 Camo - Help needed!

Hello fellas
I am about to buy this M42 helmet, but unfortunately I am not very familiar with the camo on it.I know most of the DAK helmets are M35 and M40, that's why I am wondering about M42,s.  Would you tell me if it's DAK or Mediterranean-Italian camouflage?
Any comments and opinions are appreciate it.

Best regards!
Ves

Re: M42 Camo - Help needed!

Hi Ves, from the photos it looks good to me.  If you don't have them I would also ask for photo's of the complete liner and any chinstrap fitted to the helmet.

From what I understand the M42 helmet was also used in late stages in North Africa, but in much more limited numbers.

IMO the tan camouflage paint looks original, but unless you have a verifiable history of the helmet it will be very difficult if not impossible to say which front it was used on.

As you've pointed out Italian or other Sudfront theaters likely.

I'm sure other members will also have views on this interesting piece and thanks for posting smile

Regards Markus

Hello Markus
Thanks for your comment and opinion,I really appreciate it. I got couple of more pics. Unfortunately the liners leather is not complete, but definitely looks original to the helmet. There is no chinstrap as well. I asked the seller about the background of the helmet, but sadly he doesn't know anything . Hopefully I will get some more replies, before the helmet is gone smile

Best regards!
Ves

Re: M42 Camo - Help needed!

Hi Ves, liner looks original.  Not unusual for the chinstrap to be missing.

IMO looks to be a very thick hand application of tan paint which crazed as it dried.

Maybe even another coat (very dark green) underneath the tan - which would be on top of the factory field grey finish.

Good luck.

Re: M42 Camo - Help needed!

P.S. Here is a photo of a pile of helmets captured at the end of the Tunisian campaign.

Circled helmet looks like an M42 but in typical field grey paint with eagle shield.

The photo also shows that not every helmet in North Africa received the camouflage paint treatment...

I believe that there are some rare photos of camouflaged M42's being used in Tunisia.

Ves, you may also want to have a look at the below hyperlinked thread - especially the posting by forum member Eddie on 07/01/2016.
This includes more photos of piles of helmets taken from surrendering German forces in Tunisia in 1943.

Re: M42 Camo - Help needed!

I don't see anything wrong with the paint on that one. The different layers work together, the aging looks completely natural...

Re: M42 Camo - Help needed!

Helmet looks legit to me too. I don't see any red flags. Most probably a Südfront camo rather than an African one but nothing is impossible.
