Opening of new Sir John Monash Centre and ANZAC Day 2018

Hi folks, most Australian members of the forum will know that the new Sir John Monash Centre is to be officially opened in Villers-Bretonneux in France tomorrow.  Gen. John Monash is widely regarded as Australia’s best high-ranking military commander during WWI.

The opening coincides with the 100th anniversary of the Second Battle of Villers-Bretonneux (during the German spring offensive of 1918), where Monash was the commander of the Australian Forces.

I was quite surprised when looking at the new centre in detail, it's not just your regular memorial or museum but crammed with large screens for a 'multimedia experience'.

Also plenty of collaboration with our long term friends in NZ to enable the filming of realistic wartime scenarios.

Here are a few links that may be of interest regarding the opening of the centre… … sh-centre/ … r-memorial  (go to the video screen on the lower right hand side of the web page and open up the viewer for the best view of a good short video). … -in-france … 4zazg.html

And if anyone is interested in seeing the opening, here is the link to the official opening ceremony, which will be screened live on YouTube.

Of interest to me personally is that my great uncle was one of many Australians gassed by preliminary German bombardments in the Villers-Bretonneux area prior to the main attack.

Thankfully he survived and later returned home to Australia.  He named his home after the ship which brought him back and the name plate is still on the front of the house.

Tomorrow is also remembered as ANZAC day in Australia and New Zealand.  Lest we forget.

Thanks for the post Markus, both my grandfathers were at Gallipoli, both went onto France were one survived the war and the other was killed.
