US Model 1938 Lensatic Compass

Thought I would bring out for display a couple US Model 1938 prismatic compasses. I got this pair about 30 years ago and until recently only knew they were US military but not the model! Just found that they were used mostly by officers early in WW2! Hope you all will enjoy! smile  Barron

I have one (or two?) of those tucked away around here as well.  Very sturdy and well-made devices.  Yours are very nice!  I'm in Sacramento, BTW...  Where on the central coast are you?

Re: US Model 1938 Lensatic Compass

I work in San Luis Obispo but live in the small community of Nipomo near Santa Maria. Main thing we are known for here is Jocko's steak house! We are pretty far away from everything 150 miles to Los Angeles and 250 to San Francisco Bay area so we are pretty isolated from good militaria shows except for Santa Barbara.

Re: US Model 1938 Lensatic Compass

I know the area fairly well!  I was raised in Carmel Valley and spent a lot of weekends down in Pismo before joining the USAF and moving up to Sacramento.  I don't know Jocko's but will look for it next time I'm down that way; thanks for the tip!  I have a friend who works in Lompoc and we usually go to The Hitching Post in Buellton for frenzied beef-eating.  I was not aware that they had a militaria show in Santa Barbara.  I used to go to the one in Pomona, however.

Re: US Model 1938 Lensatic Compass

Yeah Tom! The show in Santa Barbara is actually a pre-1960 firearm and related show. Surprisingly, lately a fair amount of American Indian items (about 10 tables) which one of my buddies was into! About 300 tables total with 100-150 containing militaria and 150-200 with military firearms usually. Some new laws scared some people away this time so we may see trouble soon! Several nicely restored US WW2 military vehicles. Re-enactors and military in uniform free! Barron

Hi Barron,

I'm guessing that is the show that was there last weekend?  I'll have to put that on my radar for next year!

Thanks for the intel!

Re: US Model 1938 Lensatic Compass

The show is twice a year-once in February and once in July. Very worthwhile. I usually go to visit with my old fellow Civil War re enactor friends as well as dealers and members of the local Historical Arms Associations! big_smile I am going to miss July due to Sons of Confederate Veterans National convention but will definitely be the next February! Great info, Barron.  I'm probably going to miss the summer event but will clear the calendar for February 2017.  Have a good time in Dallas this summer!

Re: US Model 1938 Lensatic Compass

Here is the type that followed the M-1938 Compass. It is described as a lensatic compass rather than prismatic and was used by soldiers of all ranks.     The US Army lensatic compass manufactured by W. & L.E. Gurley with its original pouch covered with waterproofing or MRT (Mildew Resistant Treatment). The compass lid is unmarked. This compass is considered an early WWII model, before the lids were marked “Corps of engineers U.S. Army”. The rotor is marked: W. & L.E. Gurley Troy N.Y. U.S.A. It is graduated in degrees and mils. Hope you will enjoy! Barron cool
