Jerry:

This is a nice tunic and we clearly have just about the same tunic but in different shades. Also. mine does not have the sizing tag as yours. Perhaps it was removed. I'm going to check if any residue.

Re: Luftwaffe tropical tunics

Hi Ray,

Mine also has it as an inkstamp behind the flap covering the rings holding the buttons on.

Re: Luftwaffe tropical tunics

I noticed this for sale a while back and thought it was interesting and might be relevant for this thread.

Re: Luftwaffe tropical tunics

Thought I'd post this from p115 of the French Afrikakorps book.  I had to replace some letters as it was a bit cropped.

Re: Luftwaffe tropical tunics

Okay, I'f finally had a chance to take a closer look at mine. There does appear to be a sew line parallel the sleeve. The boards are sewn in that spot. The thread used passes the "burn test" that is for sure.

Re: Luftwaffe tropical tunics

My brother just posted a period photo showing a Luftwaffe Officer on a train in the US (as a POW). Check out the photo of the officer in the lower right hand corner of the photo.

Re: Luftwaffe tropical tunics

Unfront...between you and I, we could combine our collections for an afternoon for a photo shoot and replicate the first row and include the hanging items and the luggage up above! We should attempt it...especially now that I'm purchasing the original picture from Mr. Giva! I even have (as you've seen) original leather luggage cases! Imagine if we could gain access to the WWII US troop train/passenger car in Astoria!

On another note, after going back and looking at the picture again, I notice that the man behind the hanging coconut canteen also has. a custom (or modified) Luftwaffe tunic! Notice the flap...it's the same (like a Heer tunic)! Perhaps he's from the same Luftwaffe unit as the officer (wearing visor cap) in the front row? If so, perhaps they obtained them from the same source/tailor?

I study and collect uniforms, equipment, decorations, personal effects, photos, weapons and vehicles of the ground forces of the Heer, Luftwaffe, Kriegsmarine and Waffen SS.

Re: Luftwaffe tropical tunics

Here is another interesting pic, showing an unusual tunic (not the guy in the Sahariana), though it might be a KM person and also two Italian pith helmets and the Nurse? has a KM Prestof tropenhelm, I think.  It's from Signal Magazine, copied from the web.

Jerry

Re: Luftwaffe tropical tunics

Very interesting photo Gery! From the looks of it, the man in the Sahariana is Luftwaffe (paying close attention to the shoulder boards). As for the man in the custom tunic...who knows. Nice photo either way.

Re: Luftwaffe tropical tunics

Greetings...I am teaching a WWII history class for a local college and want to purchase a DAK or Luftwaffe tropical tunic, but not sure of a good source. Not interested in an original, as is cost prohibitive. Just want a good-quality repro. Also...where might I find out what sort of insignia or other accoutrements would be on the tunic?

Re: Luftwaffe tropical tunics

Hello, you can find plenty in ebay. Sellers of repro tunics also have the matching insignia. Ask for a pair of tropical LW shoulderboards and a tropical LW breast eagle.

Re: Luftwaffe tropical tunics

Hi, i am not sitting in front of my pc now and don't have access to my archive.
But if you check post #7 in this thread you will see where the ribbon is correctly placed. For the badges you need to sew loops on the pocket. You can see how they look in post #7 again.
Cheers

Re: Luftwaffe tropical tunics

This is my second time of trying to load this… so I hope it comes through.

I have this SS sleeve badged jacket in my collection.  I have owned it for 20 ish years and I have no reason to suspect it is not original… but an original what is my question.   It came to me when I bought a big collection of jackets… and it was disregarded at the time and put in a box.

I know next to zero about tropical stuff. I have a couple of caps, a nice pair of Luftwaffe boots and a few DAK helmets. But they are things I have collected over the years.  Not specifically.  So now I would like to figure out what this jacket actually is and perhaps give it a new lease of life with original insignia.

Does anyone have any ideas ?    It has gold tress around the collar and obvious unfaded areas where SS collars would have been…. but is it just made up to deceive or was it something specific ?

Many thanks in advance and my apologies for the poor photo. When I get time I will get out of the display and take good quality images.

Re: Luftwaffe tropical tunics

This must not be SS collars. It could  be also collar tabs from the grey coat. I have seen this.

Re: Luftwaffe tropical tunics

From the provided photo, It doesn't look like an SS Sahariana tunic to me but rather a 2nd pattern Heer tropical tunic.

Please post better photos in a separate thread as this one is dedicated to LW tunics.

Thanks
Chris
