WW1 British/Commonwealth Large T-Handle Shovel - 1918

WW1 British and Commonwealth Soldiers Large T-Handle Shovel dated 1918, these are very hard to find as most were used post war by anybody who needed
a shovel and probably acquired cheap from old Army Surplus through the depression of the 1930's or reissued during WW2.
The same pattern is seen being used in WW2 photos along with other versions but as you can see in the last photo below this is WW1 with the 1918 date, can't really
make out who the manufacturer is? can only see OTHON????

It's all good and well to sing along when the world goes along with a song, but the man
worth while is the one who can smile when everything goes dead wrong.

Stu,
As I'm hunting our WW2 equivalent I know just how hard these are to find - beautiful example, and overlooked, too.
Take Care,
Mark

Very nice item. Thanks for showing. I sure hadn't seen one before. Did they have a cover or were they just carried by hand or attached to a vehicle? smile  Barron

Thanks for the illustration! Pretty awkward, but at least it gives some protection from shrapnel to the rear of the neck! wink  Barron

Re: WW1 British/Commonwealth Large T-Handle Shovel - 1918

Hi Mark
what a awesome photo...
I have never seen a New Zealander soldier in africa so fine.
It is very difficult in Italy to find NZ items dated 1941 or 42. I have only an Officer Bd jacket and his cap and helmet
Here is the helmet, with its original net.
It is very rare, this is the only Nz kaki helmet I have never seen.

It have the chinstrap bale markings II 1941  and nPz (New Zealand Pressing). These helmets were made by a company called Masport, a foundry that has been in business for around 100 years in Panmure, Auckland, this company also made the "Mills bomb" which also has the same nPz stamping.
THE RAW EDGE SHELL, in outer side retains 98% Khaki (Desert Campaign) paint, the interior of the shell retains all Khaki paint with the exception of the underside of the brim which has majority of this paint missing.
THE MKII LINER, size 7, is complete with the original drawstring and dated 1941. Made by CCL Ltd.

Just beautiful - Send it back home to New Zealand!
By the way, that's a photo of Sergeant Ian Thomas, 25th Battalion, 6th Infantry Brigade, 1942.

Re: WW1 British/Commonwealth Large T-Handle Shovel - 1918

Mark I am very interested in New Zealand items.... I know very well your mood, I also should like all the rare Italian items come back in Italy, when I often see them in other nations sad   They are the image and the memory of our grandfathers in a sad and valiant historical period

Soon I'll post other NZ objects for you.
Thanks for the description of the photo.

Re: WW1 British/Commonwealth Large T-Handle Shovel - 1918

Hi  Mark
yes total length is 38 inches, (real length is 37, because the metal piece is slightly angled)
Merry Christmas
