10th Australian Light Horse

Pictured is a Gallipoli veteran who is wearing the unofficial collar badges of the 10th ALH. The brass 'A' on his colour patch means the portrait was taken after November 1917.

G, day Desert Rat,

Interesting shot of an original member of an Australian Light Horse Regiment that served at Gallipoli - Nice!

Re: 10th Australian Light Horse

Those two photos seem a bit strange to me in the fact that the 10th Light Horse Regiment's colour patches are black over yellow but in both photos the lighter colour on the colour patches that should be yellow is even darker than the khaki tunic??? I know there were other Western Australian Light Horse Militia Regiments with similar badges. I'm not having a go at you Desert Rat I just think there may have been a mix up with these photos from what ever source they came from. As I mentioned the colour of the patches is the obvious thing, even in a black & white photo yellow would came up as closer to white and be obviously lighter in shade than khaki. And there is nothing in both photos that suggest that they are war time photos as both are taken in a studio, if they were out on the plains of Palestine or taken near the pyramids then yes that would be a different matter but both are taken indoors.

Re: 10th Australian Light Horse

You had the 10th ALH AIF and the 10th ALH AMF.

Both photos were probably taken post 1919 and show troopers from the 10th LH AMF.

I still don't know if the collar badges were an unofficial/private purchase AIF badge or the 10th LH AMF. The two photographs would indicate the 10th LH AMF post war.

Re: 10th Australian Light Horse

Yeah it's a bit of a minefield that C.M.F. stuff, there are even some errors in the badge reference books I've been told roll
