DAK Related Postcards and Necrologies

Finally ready to start posting some more items after studying what has been posted on other related sites! I will start will something that there should be a great number of and always are of great interest to most of us as historical collectors-necrologies! The Germans seemed to be very good about notifying next of kin concerning the fates of their serving relatives. Wish we could find one for every guys so that when we find a named item we might be able to honor the individual who had the item. I will start out with one each from the Army, Kriegsmarine and Luftwaffe. Nothing on the backside of the KM soldier.

Re: DAK Related Postcards and Necrologies

Figured I would add a few more pictures to my thread for some comments! First is, I believe a Lieutenant, with a silver wound badge, EK2 ribbon and AK Cuff Title standing outside a bus transport with a bunch of water cans with basin, and last but not least, some interesting boots/shoes! Caption on back enclosed showing date and location. Enjoy!

Re: DAK Related Postcards and Necrologies

Here is picture of some soldiers at cargo door of Ju-52 transport. Really dark pants and very light shirts and pith helmets. Are they Luftwaffe? Can't ID word on back. Enjoy:/

Re: DAK Related Postcards and Necrologies

Here are a couple more interesting obituary cards relating to DAK in poor condition but readable. Wish the one in panzer grenadier tropical uniform was in better shape but at least he is identifiable! Wish I could have some of this kind of stuff for some of my ancestors KIA in the American War Between the States! Hope that they are of interest!

Re: DAK Related Postcards and Necrologies

Hi don! Yes, I am a past Commander of the California State Division of Sons of Confederate Veterans with about 100 ancestors that served for the South and around a dozen that served for the North! I have been very active locating graves of Confederate veterans in California as they are rarely marked by the US government (since they lost the War) and getting them marked. In the process I also note as I research cemeteries if there are any German or Italian WW1 or WW2 veterans also. Sort of explains why I like the obituary cards too!? Can be a very interesting hobby and also meet lots of nice people in the process. Thank you for asking! cool

Re: DAK Related Postcards and Necrologies

Very nice Baron. Sounds interesting and definitely worth the effort.

Do you have photos from excavations, graves etc? If so maybe it would a good idea to start a thread in the DAK Pub section?

Re: DAK Related Postcards and Necrologies

Mostly they are regular civilian gravestones, but I will try to locate the ones from Benicia California that are military stones of DAK POWs! Saw them a couples years back, but didn't know they were DAK until recently! Most others, such as at Camp Cooke POW camp cemetery near me have been repatriated by German government. Thank you for the interest!cool

Photos of the DAK pow graves would be very much related to this thread.

Re: DAK Related Postcards and Necrologies

Found some more related items that should hopefully be of interest! First is a signed photo is of an early African campaign Knight's Cross holder Winrich Behr. His wartime activities are noted in Wikipedia as well as "Knights Cross Holders of the Afrikakorps" by Kurowski. Behr was evacuated due to illness in December 1941. There are a couple of nice interviews with Behr in old age mostly talking about his service in Stalingrad campaign. He passed away at an advanced age in 2011. cool
