Luftwaffe Tropical Shorts

G, day guys,

Nice salty faded pair of Luftwaffe Shorts just walked in the door direct from Germany, thought you may be interested in having a look?

Couldn't have asked for a better match for my long sleeved Luftwaffe shirt in colour and wear.
Makers stamp seems to be Otto Links or Linke??? or something? If any body knows this maker or if I have it wrong please let me know?

All buttons are present and seem to be all original to the shorts.
I will post pics when I get it set up on a dummy wink

I have been looking for a pair for a while to match my Luftwaffe Shirts just to show in my collection the difference between Heer & Luftwaffe uniforms.
I thought it would be nice to do a soldier manning an 88, so if anyone knows where I can buy an 88 just let me know lollollol
I have not seen many pairs of these Luftwaffe Tropical shorts, so pretty happy with these, nice large size too wink

Cheers
Stu

Re: Luftwaffe Tropical Shorts

Hi Stu, thanks for sharing your set.

I like the used and faded tropical pieces. It would be a great match with my salty LW tunic too.

Re: Luftwaffe Tropical Shorts

What are you going to use as footwear?

Long boots or low boots?

Re: Luftwaffe Tropical Shorts

Hi Chris,

Thanks mate, yes that's a nice tunic you have, I also like the faded used items. Your tunic is a good one to try and restore to it's former glory big_smile

In regards to footwear, well we all know how rare and expensive the tropical boots are if you are lucky enough to even find a pair that is sad
I have some leather low boots that I can use, but I have been told that they might be work boots? But they do look similar to Heer or Luftwaffe leather boots, they have hob nails etc.
When I set this gear up on a dummy you will see wink I'm also after a Luftwaffe shirt eagle to restore my long sleeve shirt so if anybody finds one for sale please let me know, I have been looking for a while but have not managed to find a nice used one as an unissued one would not look correct with my used shirt.

Cheers
Stu

Re: Luftwaffe Tropical Shorts

It's ok guys I may have found a nice used Luftwaffe Tropical eagle for my shirt big_smile

There is something about this one that doesn't look right though, the backing looks ok. It's just that other eagles I have seen seem to be thicker
in their construction, ie the amount of cotton. And does that cotton seem shiny??? Or maybe it's just the lighting in the photo?

What do you guys think?

Thanks
Stu

Re: Luftwaffe Tropical Shorts

Hi Stu, nice idea mate. I didn't think of the LW leather brown low boots although i bought a pair for the exact same reason but then i abandoned the idea of building up a complete LW mannequin. I prefer to do it for a Heer impression.

Here are some pics. Do your boots look like this? Mine have LW stamps underneath LBAS. They are not a matching pair but probably been worn by the same person. They have matching wear and were a barn find.

Re: Luftwaffe Tropical Shorts

LAst year i had been offered a LW pair of tropical long boots. I posted for opinions and when they got the thumps up i commited to buy them.

Then i spoke with Mark about the price and he said that LW boots are not so rare therefore the price was much higher than normal. I had already said i would take them so i had to pay the overprice. So what i want to say is that they come up for sale from time to time you just need to have the right contacts. Speak with Mark and ask him to have an eye for you. He is a well known tropical collector so many people are usually offering him stuff for sale.

Regarding the eagle, the colors look a bid odd but that could be because of the photos. It looks ok to me too. Member "all1knew" had recently a great used example for sale.

Re: Luftwaffe Tropical Shorts

Thanks Chris for quick reply wink

Those boots of yours are interesting, they are basicly exactly the same as mine, although mine don't have many markings but do have hob nails?
Actually you know Chris there was a pair of Luftwaffe Tropical Long Boots up on German ebay the other day yikes
But he was asking $2000EU which is a bit much for me at the moment as I'm trying to save a deposit for a house, so had to let them go!

And yes I have dealt with Mark before, I sold him the nice faded M40 Lubstein cap that was in my collection and he got me a few nice items for reasonable money ie DAK Greatcoat that I had never even seen before let alone thinking I would ever own one tongue Also that's were I got the breast eagle for that well used 1st pattern tunic I posted not long back with only the four buttons on the front big_smile

I always thought that I would use those leather boots for a Luftwaffe display what I really want is another heer long boot (left foot) as I have a pair of jodpurs
that they would go nicely with as I always wanted to do that type of display or with a pair of shorts with the tropenhelm or M35 with goggles of course cool cool cool

DAK long boot come to papa tongue

Cheers
Stu

Re: Luftwaffe Tropical Shorts

$2000 is a ridiculous price. Was the seller from Italy? I saw one pair at ebay, long time ago which was also very expensive and had the leather parts repainted with black paint.

I know one 3rd pattern Heer boot for sale but it's also a right one. What happened with the left boots? hmm There is also another member here who owns just the right boot as well.

Yeah those greatcoats are very rare and also very expensive. I saw one for sale recently but somehow i don't find them very appealing so 1 item less on my wish list tongue lol

Re: Luftwaffe Tropical Shorts

Hi Stu

That is a really nice setup. Collectors Guild has a pair of Luft Tall boots for $1550. I have also seen a pair come up on ebay a few times for around $1100 if I remember correctly. If I see it again I will let you know.

Re: Luftwaffe Tropical Shorts

Hi Chris

Here is a link to the pair-http://www.germanmilitaria.com/Luftwaffe/photos/L004660.html

You are right the price difference is big. I was lucky to find a pair of Heer 3rd pattern tall boots last year from a house cleaning in Germany.

Re: Luftwaffe Tropical Shorts

Thanks Barry, yes I had seen those Luftwaffe Boots before, but as the Aussie dollar has slumped over the last 12 months or so $1550us bumps up to
roughly $2000au. And as I mentioned trying to save up a deposit for a house my savings suffer too much, otherwise I would have jumped on them.
But thanks anyway much appreciated Barry, cheers wink I just can't buy any expensive militaria for a while and it's killing me man sad

Chris,...in regards to the DAK/Tropical Greatcoat, yeah because they are so rare I never really thought about them much but when I was offered one for
what I thought was a reasonable price, I pounced as I thought I may not get another chance tongue And when I had a look through some books I realised that
there were so many pics of them wearing their greatcoats, so I thought that's me mate I'm in for sure big_smile Plus it also opens up some more display options with out
needing another tunic, as I have a few different caps/hats/Tropenhelms, 3 x helmets, shorts, 2 x straight trousers and breeches, so I could do 3 or 4 guys together at the same time with the planned luftwaffe 88 fella.

And when it arrived the condition & wool quality is just amazing!!!

And Chris here are those boots I mentioned, I'd forgotten about the makers mark on the bottom, hard to read but it's KLEIN?????? something around the circle on the inside then what looks to be a stylized graphic of a crown or something above III then another graphic or something? beside it. I tried to research it on the net but nothing is came up??? Then there is a size 45 or that's what I was told which is not a military size but civilian, this is not a date? They are a large size boot, good for a dummy display, so would be ok I suppose for my Luftwaffe soldier with some rolled down socks or folded over the boots as you see in the period photos.

Original laces as well with metal ends, as you can see very similar to yours except for the hooks.

Cheers
Stu

Re: Luftwaffe Tropical Shorts

Hi guys.
Barry thanks for the link.

Stu the boots look like mine, but the markings are unknown to me. Both the maker's and size stamp.

It's possible to be civilian but why the hobnails? The wide horse shoe under the heel would indicate foreign production for example Czech made. My knowledge is very limited with footwear.

Have you tried posting in a more generic forum?

Re: Luftwaffe Tropical Shorts

I bought that Luftwaffe Eagle for my shirt and it's already arrived in the mail tongue
Bloody fast postage that's for sure big_smile And yes it does look better in hand so I'm very happy.

I have posted a few photos for you guys to have a look, I have not sewn it to the shirt as yet as I'm looking for some original thread to use.
So if anybody has some heer tropical thread they can spare (probably about half a metre) so I can use it for the outside and the inside that would be fantastic!
I can pay with paypal, as you can see the original thread is the olive green not the luftwaffe tan colour, just so I can keep it the same as it was originally.

Isn't it amazing how much it changes the whole look of the display just by adding an eagle big_smile
It will be nice to be able to restore this shirt back to it's original glory tongue

Cheers
Stu

Very nice display mate.
Well done.
I have some thread to send you. I have both the olive green and tan color.
The only thing you need now is a LW webbed belt; but very pricey hmm

Re: Luftwaffe Tropical Shorts

Thanks Chris, it's all come together very nicely hasn't it, could not be happier tongue
And thanks for the offer of the thread Chris, that would be fantastic, as I mentioned it would be good to be able to use some heer olive thread to stick with the originality of this eagle.
So maybe if you wanted to email me we can work out a price for the thread and postage of course, much appreciated Chris for your help with this matter, cheers mate wink

S.Vestae wrote:
Veru nice Tim ! but where is the Flak canon?

Thanks Seba, Flak 88 is on it's way directly from Tobruk lollollol
I wish sad

Hey guys I also just found out why the shorts are a bit darker down the bottom, I was wondering about this darker area about half way down?
I thought the original owner may have rolled them up as you see often in period photos, but when I rolled them up once, underneath was still darker with no fading.
So I rolled them one more time and again the same, still dark (no fading), but I just checked again and rolled them three times and wooohooo!!!

Look at these photos and you can see that the fading now matches the rest of the shorts, so this is how the soldier wore these shorts, rolled up at the bottom three times big_smile

Thanks again Chris for the thread offer, just brilliant wink Oh and I almost forgot, I do have a tan web belt it's just that it is on another display at the moment but I will take another couple of pics with this belt soon.

Cheers
Stu

Re: Luftwaffe Tropical Shorts

Thanks Eddie, I think I know the gas mask you are talking about for $1225EU? But when I found it the other day I'm sure they had that price crossed out & had $1103EU, plus the first few photos looked like a nice yellow colour but the last 20 pics just looked like ordnance tan colour?

May have just been the camera but it makes me suspicious, I wouldn't like to pay that type of money and find out when it arrived that it's just a late war tan painted canister?
Plus it has Paris written on it, is that suppose to be part of the soldiers name??? roll And as I mentioned I'm trying to save a deposit for a house so to spend that type of money is not a good idea for me at present.

But thanks anyway Eddie for your interest, cheers big_smile

Re: Luftwaffe Tropical Shorts

Here you go guys, Chris was kind enough to send me some of his thread to help me restore the shirt and keep it all original.

Thanks Chris, I can't thank you enough, cheers mate wink

I was able to sew the thread back into the original holes that were still present with some patients. And even managed to keep the imperfections of the original sewing as you can see in the last photo. Sorry about the mannequin, this one I need to fix up the skin tone a bit better, he is too pale for the desert, I only used this one as the shorts fit perfectly, the previous one I could not do up the top three buttons. Plus the tan tropical belt did not fit the other mannequin either.

It's amazing how much better it looks by just adding that small piece of insignia to the shirt tongue

It's all good and well to sing along when the world goes along with a song, but the man
worth while is the one who can smile when everything goes dead wrong.
