A good book, but like many of this type, some of the items are not original.

Re: Tropical Uniforms of the German Army 1940-1945

I agree with Jerry.
Many items in this book are reproductions, while the photography is very poor (lighting, composition etc) Some of the photos are even back to front and upside down?!
I do think they set out to do a basic 'sketch' of the German Soldier in tropical uniform, but it went badly wrong with quality control and what was acceptable ('Hey - Most guys won't know what they're looking at so we'll let it slip through...')
I have yet to see a book that is flawless, (and let us not forget new information is being brought forward regularly so most books are out of date by the time they go to the publishers) but this one really hurt itself...
Let's create a list of more trustworthy publications. Yes - there will be mistakes in each (and feel free to point them out) but let's work on a set which would be useful in a collectors library...
Best Regards,
Mark

Yes, Sebastien! A great wee reference book - (and Jose is a very nice guy, too!).
It's companion book on headgear is also valuable. A pity the images are mainly in black and white - but well worth having.

Mark

Both are very good, even if mostly in b&W.  The Kurtz book is very good, but has some 'iffy' items in it, and though mostly well illustrated, some item's are not as well covered as others.

Dal McGuirk's book is a classic, but the collection photographs could be updated.

Jerry

Re: Tropical Uniforms of the German Army 1940-1945

Jerry,
Not so good. The paper quality is low so the image detail is poor. Some very interesting shots, but let down by the image quality.
Dal's books are still what tropical collectors should base their knowledge on, although some details need to be updated now we have newer information.
I also agree - the photos need to be enlarged! This was something the author requested (as well as other images) which did not make it into the RAinA (Rommels Army In Africa) volume.
Also agree upon the 'Kurtz' book. Clearly some items are worth more investigation....

Thanks Mark for the answer on that book.

The G Forty books have some good B&W pics, 'the road to Alexandria' and 'the long way back'.

Jerry

Inside the Afrika Korps

Bruce I. Gudmundsson, Rainer Kriebel, United States War Dept Military Intelligence Service, Us Army Intelligence Service

http://afrikakorps.forumcrea.com/img/avatars/afrikakorps/big/2_ass.jpg

The German Afrika Korps was an outstanding military organization that witnessed both the heights of glory and the depths of defeat in the Western Desert campaign. This new book presents the battles of the Afrika Korps as seen through the eyes of a trained general staff officer, and gives a key insight into a formidable fighting force at the height of its powers. Kriebel's account highlights the German response to the Crusader offensive and analyzes the unparalleled genius and fatal flaws of Erwin Rommel's generalship. Inside the Afrika Korps is a key to understanding Rommel and the men he commanded, and exposes the secrets of this exemplary fighting force's success as well as the dangers inherent in victory.

Das Afrika Korps
Erwin Rommel and the Germans in Africa, 1941-43
by Franz Kurowski

http://i53.tinypic.com/bio03d.jpg

Product Description:

This action-packed history of the Germans in Africa in World War II covers one of the most famous military units of all time under one of the best commanders.

"LOOK THEY'RE COMING STRAIGHT AT US!"

Unteroffizier Heintze alerted his comrades. He took one of the tanks up in his sights, knocking it out barely 200 meters in front of the gun's position. The second tank continued to approach. It reeked of burned oil and cordite. The tracks rattled loudly. The steel monster was then in the Germans' position and rolled over one of the gun trails. It kept going.

It was uiet again for a while. Then ten enemy tanks showed up off to the flank. The flak opened fire at 5,000 meters. When the enemy tanks had closed to 4,000 meters, the lead vehicle was hit and came to a halt. Then a second one was hit. The enemy was flabbergasted. The Germans were engaging them at ranges that were impossible to conceive. The eight remaining tanks turned and disappeared into the evening twilight.

- The Afrika Korps in action at Hill 208, southwest of Fort Capuzzo

About the Author:

Franz Kurowski, who served as a journalist in World War II, has written numerous books and lives in Germany.

Re: Tropical Uniforms of the German Army 1940-1945

There are literally hundreds of publications on the German forces in Afrika, many worth having. Insofar as references, my favorites are Kurtz's AFRIKAKORPS (DB's book), along with John Hodgin's "German Paratroops in North Afrika"...both Schiffer books.  Of course McGirk's book was by far the best reference at it's time.

Sebastien, thank you for starting this web site !!  smile

21ST PANZER DIVISION: Rommel's Afrika Korps Spearhead (Spearhead Series)

http://afrikakorps.forumcrea.com/img/avatars/afrikakorps/big/2_ree.jpg

The unit fought in all the major battles of the desert war until destroyed around Tunis in 1943. Reconstituted in France in 1943 it was again almost completely annihilated in the battle of the Falaise Gap. Again reformed it ended the war on the Eastern Front, bringing to an end a varied and chequered history.

Re: Tropical Uniforms of the German Army 1940-1945

Thankfully, with the advent of Dal's essential DAK book in the 80's, there has been an increase in good reference materials. Though as previously mentioned, the book at the beginning of this thread will not be considered one of them. The early Bender book was helpful in its day as was the 2 vol. 'Afrikakorps at War' books by George Forty which were packed with great pix. They have been reprinted but I'm unsure as to their availability.

Probably the Kurtz books, though Dal Mcguirks book is great, as are the two books by Figueroa, though all are a bit out of date.
